Boxing Betting Preview: Mario Barrios vs. Yordenis Ugas
September 30, 2023
In the lead-up to the Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo main event, the undercard showcases two skilled welterweights that are vying for a shot at the 147-pound championship. Former titleholder Yordenis Ugas will go toe-to-toe with Mario Barrios, contending for the interim WBC championship for an exciting betting opportunity.
Location: T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada
Date: Saturday, September 30, 2023
Main Card: 11:00 PM ET
Watch on: Showtime
Mario Barrios Betting Preview
Barrios (27-2, 18 KOs) is coming off of a TKO win over Jovanie Santiago back in February of this year. This got him back on track after losing two consecutive fights, which his last win was in October of 2020.
Out of 29 bouts and 162 rounds, he has landed knockouts 66 percent of the time. According to rankings, he is currently sitting at 27
th
globally and 10
th
in the United States for welterweight.
He had primarily gained most of his wins in the super lightweight division. However, he is only recently gaining momentum in the welterweight division with just a few bouts under his belt.
While the win against Santiago was much needed, he will need to do more. Now is the perfect opportunity to land a quality win against a veteran boxer in the division.
Yordenis Ugas Betting Preview
Ugas (27-5, 12 KOs) is returning to the ring after a TKO loss against Errol Spence Jr. in April of last year. This snapped his previous four-fight win streak dating back to 2019.
He has accumulated 32 bouts and 218 rounds total, with a knockout rate at 44 percent of the time. He is a former title holder and has a lot of quality experience to gain an edge in this fight.
His career has been wild to say the least, but he gained more traction in 2016 with a quality win against Jamal James, who was formerly unbeaten. He later went on to land his first title, which was a huge upset against Manny Pacquiao in 2021.
He lost his title to Errol Spence Jr., who gave Ugas an eye injury in that battle. He had to recover from that, which is why he has not been fighting for a while.
Game Odds, Series Trends and Free Pick
According to MyBookie's latest odds, Yordenis Ugas is poised as a moderately favored fighter for this upcoming event. To maximize your potential winnings, you might want to include Ugas in a parlay bet, combining it with other boxing matches scheduled for that night.
Mario Barrios: +209
Yordenis Ugas: -312
While Ugas is 37 and coming off of an eye injury a year ago, he has a great opportunity to get back on track. Barrios has not faced anyone quite like him, which should bode well for Ugas’ chances.
Spooky Express Pick: Take Yordenis Ugas to Win at -312
