Buffalo Bills vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

August 17, 2024

Game 2 of a tripleheader on the NFL Network in Week 2 of the 2024 NFL Preseason will feature the Buffalo Bills traveling to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to face the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium. The game will kick off at 7:00 PM ET on Saturday night.

Bills and Steelers Week 1 of Preseason Review

Both teams lost their first game of the 2024 NFL Preseason in week 1. The Buffalo Bills suffered a blowout loss at home against the Chicago Bears by a score of 6-33, while the Pittsburgh Steelers suffered an eight-point loss at home against the Houston Texans.

Not much went well for the Buffalo Bills in week 1 of the NFL preseason, as they lost by 27 points at home against the Chicago Bears. However, the blowout didn't happen until the 4th quarter as the Bills only trailed by a touchdown after Tyler Bass kicked a 49-yard field goal with 2:58 left in the 3rd quarter. The Bills would implode in the 4th quarter as their lone turnover in the game came off a Shane Buechele interception that was returned for a touchdown and would allow the Bears to score a touchdown on Chicago's next two possessions.

Buffalo had very little offensive output in the game and was outgained by Chicago by 200 to 340 yards offensively. However, they won the time of possession battle 32:08 to 27:52. Tyler Bass accounted for the scores with a 49-yard field goal and a 24-yard field goal. The Buffalo Bills will look to bounce back following the week 1 loss in the preseason when they travel to face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2 of the 2024 NFL Preseason.

The Pittsburgh Steelers also lost their week 1 matchup in the preseason at home against the Houston Texans 12-20. They would allow the first 17 points of the game before Kyle Allen scored the first touchdown with a 6-yard passing touchdown to Connor Heyward, with the other touchdown scored by the Steelers coming on the ground with a one-yard rushing touchdown from Daijun Edwards.

Russell Wilson did not see any action in week 1 of the preseason. However, Justin Fields did see limited action and looked decent in the passing game, completing five of six attempts for 67 yards. Even though the Steelers lost the game, Pittsburgh won the time of possession 31:32 to 28:28 and outgained the Texans 344 to 255 total yards offensively. Still, the turnover battle played a crucial role in the loss, as the Steelers turned the ball over twice while the Texans didn't have a turnover.

Pittsburgh lost the game at home, failed to cover the 3-point spread as an underdog, and will look to get to 1-1 in the preseason when they host the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 of the NFL Preseason on Saturday night.

Recent Series Outcomes and Trends

These teams last played in the 2024 AFC Wild Card round, with the Buffalo Bills coming away with a 31-17 win at home. This extended their winning streak to two games in the series and was their fourth win in the last five games. The Bills outscored the Steelers by an average of 25.6 to 13.6 points per game in those contests and covered the spread in four of the five games.

Game Pick

Buffalo has won four of the last five games in the series while compiling a 4-1 ATS record in those matchups. However, the Steelers have covered the spread in five of their last six preseason games, with the previous weekend's game ending their five-game winning streak ATS in the preseason, while the Bills have failed to cover the spread in 11 of their last 16 games.

As a result, I am buying the .5 point and laying the 4 points with the Pittsburgh Steelers when they host the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 of the 2024 NFL Preseason on Saturday night.
