Champions League Betting Preview: PSV Eindhoven vs Lens

November 8, 2023

PSV Eindhoven take on Lens in a crucial Champions League group game at Philips Stadion on Wednesday evening.

Both sides played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Stade Félix Bollaert-Delélis two weeks ago. Johan Bakayoko opened the scoring for PSV Eindhoven early in the second-half, but Elye Wahi leveled the score for the home side 11 minutes later.

PSV Eindhoven continued their flawless run in the Eredivisie with a dominant 6-0 win at Heracles on Saturday afternoon. Peter Bosz's men have won all 11 games so far, scoring 41 goals and conceding just five to earn a seven-point lead over reigning champions Feyenoord in second.

Remarkably, PSV Eindhoven have scored 11 goals in their last two Eredivisie matches, including a massive 5-2 comeback victory over bitter rivals Ajax on 29 October.

Peter Bosz's side need to take that form into the clash with Lens on Wednesday night. A win is crucial to put PSV into a good position heading into tough games to come over their Group B rivals.

PSV Eindhoven started their first Champions League group stage campaign since 2018-19 with a heavy 4-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal and they also rescued a point in their first home game - a 2-2 draw with Europa League winners Sevilla.

Hirving Lozano is improving his performances up front and he could be the one to inspire PSV to a big win on Wednesday. The Mexican's hat-trick already inspired PSV's victory over Ajax 10 days ago and is favored to start on the wing.

Up front, Luuk de Jong boasts 15 goals in all competitions this season. All in all, the 33-year-old forward has scored 15 goals and 8 assists in 19 appearances, and will be eager to add to his tally against Lens.

Ricardo Pepi was once again introduced as a second-half substitute for PSV Eindhoven against Heracles and he scored his first goal since September. The USMNT international is yet to start a game since he joined the Dutch giants this summer, but he already has three goals to his name.

Another US international Malik Tillman, who joined PSV Eindhoven on a season-long loan this summer, also scored against Heracles - his fourth goal in seven Eredivisie appearances (starting just three of them).

Meanwhile, Bosz has to decide who will feature in attacking midfield with Guus Til putting in good form over the past few weeks. The Dutchman could get the nod over Malik Tillman or Ismael Saibari.

The PSV boss remains without injured Noa Lang, along with Armel Bella-Kotchap, Armando Obispo and Mauro Junior.

Lens Betting Preview (+360 at Everygame)

Lens were held to a 1-1 draw at Lorient on Saturday as Franck Haise's men sit 10th in the Ligue 1 table, seven points behind the top four.

They had to endure a difficult start to the new campaign but The Blood and Gold are now unbeaten in nine games across all competitions (4-5-0) - since a 1-0 home loss to Metz in Ligue 1 in mid-September.

Franck Haise's side occupy second spot in Group B of the Champions League and are pushing hard to reach the knockouts for the first time in the club’s history.

Elye Wahi, who bagged 19 goals in 33 Ligue 1 games for Montpellier last season, is still struggling to unleash his potential at Lens, at least when it comes to the domestic games. He has scored only one goal in 8 top-flight appearances (starting four of them), but he has been doing much better in the Champions League.

Wahi scored the equalizer against PSV Eindhoven two weeks ago and the 20-year-old forward has been directly involved in three goals (two goals and one assist) in as many Champions League appearances.

Lens have no fresh injury concerns with goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez, as well as Jimmy Cabot and David Costa all ruled out. However, Wesley Said is back in the squad.

Possible Starting Lineups of PSV Eindhoven and Lens

  • PSV Eindhoven: Walter Benítez - Sergino Dest, Olivier Boscagli, André Ramalho, Jordan Teze - Jerdy Schouten, Joey Veerman - Hirving Lozano, Guus Til, Johan Bakayoko - Luuk de Jong. (4-2-3-1)

  • Lens: Brice Samba - Jonathan Gradit, Kevin Danso, Facundo Medina - Przemyslaw Frankowski, Nampalys Mendy, Salis Abdul Samed, Deiver Machado - Angelo Fulgini, Florian Sotoca - Elye Wahi. (3-4-2-1)

Lens currently occupy second place in Group B on five points, and could reinforce their last-16 hopes with a favorable score here. They are yet to lose a game in the Champions League this term.

PSV Eindhoven, on the other hand, will be desperate to win the match against Lens as they are yet to claim a victory in this season's group stage.

The Dutch giants are unbeaten in nine home matches across all competitions this season, winning eight of them. They have scored two or more goals in each of them, but have also conceded in their last four home matches.

It's time for PSV to step up - it's a must-win game for them and the home crowd should cheer loud and proud.

Peter Bosz's men have been brilliant in the Eredivisie so far and cannot stop scoring. However, they have also been unable to replicate that in the Champions League proper so far, so we shouldn't underestimate the pressure on them.

All in all, PSV Eindhoven are now without a victory in 15 matches in the Champions League group stage (losing nine) - since a crucial 2-1 home win over CSKA Moscow in December 2015.
