College Football Betting Preview: Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs

September 30, 2023

The Alabama Crimson Tide will go on the road this week to Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field in Starkville, Mississippi, to face the Mississippi State Bulldogs. This game is slated to take place at 9:00 PM on ESPN.

Both teams have a disgruntled fan base even though Alabama has a record of 3-1 they have struggled to be consistent on offense, however, the Crimson Tide did look better in the 2nd half against Ole Miss last week. The post-Mike Leach era has not gotten off to a good start for Zach Arnett as the Bulldogs enter this game 0-2 in SEC play and with the switch from an Air-Raid offense to a Pro-Style offense Mississippi State has not looked great on offense and their defense has not been great either.

Things will not get any better for the Mississippi State Bulldogs when they host the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday night in week 5 of the college football season. Will the Bulldogs keep the game closer than expected or will the Crimson Tide win in a rout? Let’s take a look at how these teams have fared this season.

The Alabama Crimson Tide enter this game ranked 12th in the AP Poll and 11th in the Coaches Poll with a record of 3-1 following a 24-10 win at home against the Ole Miss Rebels while covering the 7-point spread as a home favorite in week 4 of the college football season. Alabama scored 24 points while compiling a total of 356 yards offensively which included 225 passing yards and 131 rushing yards while allowing 10 points and 301 total yards defensively which included 245 passing yards and 56 rushing yards.

Jalen Milroe led the team in passing, completing 17 of 21 attempts for 225 yards with a touchdown and an interception while rushing for 28 yards. Jase McClellan led the team in rushing with 17 carries for 105 yards and a touchdown while adding two receptions for 12 yards. Jalen Hale led the team in receiving, catching both targets for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Mississippi State enters this game with a record of 2-2 following a 30-37 loss on the road against the South Carolina Gamecocks while failing to cover the 6-point spread as a road underdog in week 4 of the college football season. The Bulldogs scored 30 points while compiling 519 total yards offensively which included 487 passing yards and 32 rushing yards while allowing 37 points and 432 total yards defensively which included 288 passing yards and 144 rushing yards.

Will Rogers led the team in passing, completing 30 of 48 attempts for 487 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Jo’Quavious Marks led the team in rushing with 12 carries for 27 yards and a touchdown while adding five receptions for 15 yards. Lideatrick Griffin led the team in receiving, catching seven of ten targets for 256 yards and a touchdown.

BookMaker has the Alabama Crimson Tide listed as 14.5-point favorites on the road against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday night in week 5 of the college football season. Alabama has won the last ten matchups in a row while going 7-3 ATS in the last ten and 3-0 ATS in the last three games in the series. Alabama is 2-2 ATS overall, 0-1 ATS on the road, 2-2 ATS as a favorite, and 1-0 ATS in conference games this season while the Mississippi State Bulldogs are 1-3 ATS overall, 1-2 ATS at home, 0-2 ATS as an underdog, and 0-2 ATS in conference games on the year.

Alabama is the more talented team and has been the dominant team in the series, winning the previous ten matchups in a row. The Crimson Tide are 7-3 ATS in the last ten and 5-0 ATS in the last five games in the series while also having been the better team at covering the spread this season going 2-2 ATS overall while the Bulldogs are 1-3 ATS overall.
