College Football Betting Preview: Colorado Buffaloes vs TCU Horned Frogs

September 2, 2023

The Colorado Buffaloes have been one of the most talked about teams in the offseason after finishing with a record of 1-11 and a Pac-12 Conference record of 1-8 which led to a tie for last place in the Pac-12 and the Buffaloes missing a bowl game for the 2nd consecutive season, Colorado fired Karl Dorrell midway through the season and hired Deion Sanders in the offseason to serve as their head coach.

Deion Sanders most recently served as the head coach for the Jackson State Tigers from 2020-2022. Sanders hired Sean Lewis as the new Offensive Coordinator and Charles Kelly as the new Defensive Coordinator. Lewis most recently served as the head coach for the Kent State Golden Flashes while Kelly most recently served as the Assistant Defensive Coordinator/Safeties coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

This season, Colorado enters the season with an over/under win total of 3.5 wins which means the Buffaloes are projected to miss a bowl game for the 3rd consecutive season and based on Vegas projections are projected to be the 2nd worst team in the Pac-12 only better than the Stanford Cardinals.

The TCU Horned Frogs were the biggest surprise team in college football last season. After finishing with a record of 5-7 overall and a Big 12 record of 3-6 in 2021, the Horned Frogs finished last year with an overall record of 13-2 and a Big 12 record of 9-0 in the Big 12 which led to an appearance in the Big 12 Championship game against the Kansas State Wildcats a game that resulted in a 28-31 loss and a spot in the College Football Playoffs in which the Horned Frogs defeated the Michigan Wolverines by a score of 51-45 in the Semifinals before losing to the Georgia Bulldogs in the National Championship game by a score of 7-65.

This season, TCU enters the year with an over/under win total of 7.5 wins which means they are projected to make a bowl game for the 2nd consecutive season and enter the year ranked 17th in the AP Poll and 16th in the Coaches Poll. Based on Vegas odds, the TCU Horned Frogs are projected to be the 5th best team in the Big 12 behind the Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, Kansas State Wildcats, and Texas Tech Red Raiders.

BookMaker has the TCU Horned Frogs listed as 20.5-point favorites at home against the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday in week 1 of the college football season. These teams have only played each other one other time in college football which resulted in a 38-13 win for the TCU Horned Frogs last season. Colorado finished with a record of 2-10 ATS overall, 0-6 ATS on the road, and 2-10 ATS as an underdog while TCU finished 10-4-1 ATS overall, 5-1 ATS at home, and 7-3-1 ATS as a favorite.

TCU is the more talented team this season even though I expect Deion Sanders to turn Colorado around quickly. The Horned Frogs enter the season with an over/under win total of 7.5 while the Buffaloes enter the game with an over/under win total of 3.5 games. These teams met last season in which TCU dominated the game against Colorado winning by a score of 38-13.

I look for that to be the case again this season which is why I am buying the .5 point and taking the TCU Horned Frogs -20 on BookMaker for this matchup on Saturday.
