College Football Betting Preview: Hawaii Rainbow Warriors vs. Stanford Cardinal

September 1, 2023

The Stanford Cardinals finished last season with a record of 3-9 in David Shaw’s 12th and final year as head coach which led to an 11th place finish in the Pac-12 and missing a bowl game 3rd consecutive season. The Cardinals hired Troy Taylor as the head coach, Taylor most recently served as the head coach for the Sacramento State Hornets from 2019-2022. Taylor will also serve as the Offensive Coordinator for Stanford and hired Bobby April to serve as the Defensive Coordinator April most recently served as the Outside Linebackers coach for the Wisconsin Badgers from 2018-2022. The Cardinals enter this season with an over/under win total of 3 wins which is one of the lowest over/under win totals in college football and based on Vegas odds are projected to finish as the worst team in the PAC-12 as they are +20000 to win the conference in Taylor’s first year as head coach.

Last week Hawaii didn’t get the win in their season opener against the Vanderbilt Commodores on the road, losing by a score of 28-35, however, they managed to cover the 17-point spread. The Rainbow Warriors had 391 total yards offensively, 351 passing yards, and 40 rushing yards. Brayden Schager led the team in passing completing 27 of 35 attempts for 351 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Landon Sims led the team in rushing with nine carries for 38 yards. Pofele Ashlock led the team in receiving, catching seven of nine targets for 127 yards and a touchdown.

BookMaker has the Stanford Cardinals listed as 3.5-point favorites on the road against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on Friday night in week 1 of the college football season. This will be the first time that these teams have played each other in college football. Stanford finished last season with a record of 2-10 ATS overall, 1-5 ATS on the road, and 0-2 ATS as a favorite while Hawaii is 1-0 ATS overall and 1-0 ATS as an underdog this season.

Neither team is projected to have a good season this year as Stanford has an over/under win total of 3 wins while Hawaii has already lost their first game of the season on the road against the Vanderbilt Commodores after entering the season with an over/under win total of 3.5 games. Both are projected to finish near the bottom of the standings in their respective conferences. However, Hawaii did show some fight last week against the Vanderbilt Commodores as they covered the 17-point spread and look to have an above-average passing offense this season after last week’s performance. I could see this game going either way, however, when that is the case I will always recommend taking the points which is what I will be doing for this matchup by buying the .5 point and taking the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors +4 at home against the Stanford Cardinals in week 1 of the college football season on BookMaker for this matchup on Friday night.
