College Football Betting Preview: Hawaii Rainbow Warriors vs. Vanderbilt Commodores

August 26, 2023

Neither of these teams finished with a winning record last season with the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors finishing with a record of 3-10 which was their worst record since the 2017 college football season and they weren’t bowl-eligible after making a bowl in each of the previous four seasons. The Vanderbilt Commodores finished with a record of 5-7 and barely missed making a bowl game last year which made it the 4th consecutive season missing a bowl game.

Hawaii enters this season with an over/under win total of 3.5 games which means they are likely to miss a bowl game for the 2nd consecutive season. The Rainbow Warriors are projected to be the 3rd worst team in the Mountain West only ahead of The New Mexico Lobos and the Nevada Wolf Pack.

The Commodores aren’t expected to fare much better as they enter the year with the same over/under win total of 3.5 games and are projected to be the worst team in the SEC as they are +48026 to win the SEC Championship this year which will likely mean that the Commodores will not become bowl eligible for the 5th consecutive season.

BookMaker has the Vanderbilt Commodores listed as 17.5-point favorites at home against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. Vanderbilt dominated the game last season on the road winning by a score of 63-10 and covering the 9-point spread.

Vanderbilt had a losing record of 5-7 last season and finished with a record of 5-7 ATS overall, 1-5 ATS at home, and 1-1 ATS as a favorite with one of the covers coming against Hawaii.

The Rainbow Warriors only won three games last season, however, Hawaii was one of the best teams at covering the spread last season going 9-4 ATS overall, 4-2 ATS on the road, and 8-4 ATS as an underdog, one of the losses against the spread came against the Vanderbilt Commodores at home last year.

Vanderbilt is the more talented team and that was on full display last season when the Commodores defeated the Rainbow Warriors on the road by a score of 63-10. Neither team is expected to be great this season, however, the win total for Vanderbilt also has to do somewhat with the conference that they are affiliated with in the SEC as the SEC has been one of the most decorated conferences in college football well over a decade as they have won four consecutive National Championship once with Alabama and LSU and the last two in a row by the Georgia Bulldogs. I look for a more talented team to take care of business at home against an inferior team which is why I am laying the 17.5 points with the Vanderbilt Commodores in what should be one of the few wins this season. As a result, I am buying the .5 point and taking the Vanderbilt Commodores -17 at home against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on BookMaker for this matchup in week 0 of the college football season on Saturday night.
