September 8, 2023

We have a nice Friday Night Football game on tap this week, as the Illinois fighting Illini travel to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas and take on the Kansas Jayhawks. Currently, the Jayhawks are favored by a field goal, with the total sitting right around 56 to 56-5.

The Illinois Fighting Illini started the season off with a win at home against the Toledo Rockets by a score of 30-28, however, the Fighting Illini did not cover the spread as a 9-point favorite. Illinois scored 30 points while having 374 total yards offensively, 206 passing yards, and 168 rushing yards while allowing 28 points, 416 total yards offensively, 230 passing yards, and 186 rushing yards.

Luke Altmyer led the team in passing and rushing completing 18 of 26 attempts for 206 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while adding 69 rushing yards on nine attempts. Pat Bryant led the team in receiving, catching six of seven targets for 59 yards and two touchdowns.

Kansas started the season off with a win against the Missouri State Bears, an FCS opponent, at home by a score of 48-17, however, the Jayhawks did not cover the spread as a 32.5-point favorite at home. The Kansas Jayhawks scored 48 points and compiled 521 total yards offensively which included 276 passing yards and 245 rushing yards while allowing 17 points and giving up 217 total yards offensively which included 143 passing yards and 74 rushing yards.

Jason Bean led the team in passing completing 22 of 28 attempts for 276 yards and two touchdowns while adding 41 rushing yards on eight attempts. Devin Neal led the team in rushing with 13 attempts for 94 yards and a touchdown while adding three receptions for 25 yards and a touchdown. Lawrence Arnold led the team in receiving, catching all four targets for 77 yards.

BookMaker has the Kansas Jayhawks listed as 3-point favorites at home against the Illinois Fighting Illini on Friday in week 2 of the college football season. This will be the first time in the history of these programs that they will face each other in college football.

Illinois is 0-1 ATS overall this season after finishing last season with a record of 8-5 ATS overall, 4-1 ATS on the road, and 3-2 ATS as an underdog while Kansas is 0-1 ATS overall, 0-1 ATS at home, and 0-1 ATS as a favorite this season after finishing last season with a record of 7-5-1 ATS overall, 4-1-1 ATS at home, and 3-0 ATS as a favorite.

Neither team is projected to be great this season as the Illinois Fighting Illini entered the season with an over/under win total of 6.5 wins while the Kansas Jayhawks entered the season with an over/under win total of 6 wins which means both teams are projected to be bowl-eligible this season, however, neither will be one of the best in their respective conference. Illinois struggled in their first game of the season as the Fighting Illini trailed the Toledo Rockets 7-12 at halftime before outscoring the Rockets 23-16 in the 2nd half.

I look for the Kansas Jayhawks to get the win in this matchup at home against the Illinois Fighting Illini on Friday in week 2 of the college football season which is why I will be taking the Kansas Jayhawks -3 on BookMaker for this matchup on Friday night.
