College Football Betting Preview: Michigan Wolverines vs. UNLV Rebels

September 9, 2023

The UNLV won in week 1 at home against the Bryant Bulldogs by a score of 44-14, however, the UNLV Rebels will face a much tougher opponent in their week 2 matchup as the Rebels travel to the Big House to take on the #2 ranked Michigan Wolverines. Will the Rebels keep the game closer or will the Michigan Wolverines win in a rout and cover the 37-point spread in week 2 of the college football season? Let’s take a look at how these teams performed in week 1 of the college football season.

The UNLV Rebels enter this game with a record of 1-0 after defeating the Bryant Bears at home in week 1 by a score of 44-14 as well as covering the 16.5-point spread as a favorite in week 1 of the college football season. UNLV scored 44 points while compiling a total of 409 total yards offensively which included 126 passing yards and 283 rushing yards while allowing 14 points and 409 total yards defensively which included 230 passing yards and 179 rushing yards.

Doug Brumfield led the team in passing, completing 11 of 18 attempts for 86 yards and an interception while adding 71 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground. Vincent Davis Jr. led the team in rushing with three carries for 79 yards and a touchdown. Jacob De Jesus led the team in receiving with four receptions for 50 yards.

Michigan enters this game with a record of 1-0 and is ranked 2nd in the AP Poll and 2nd in the Coaches Poll following their week 1 win at home against the East Carolina Pirates by a score of 30-3, however, the Michigan Wolverines failed to cover the 36-point spread as a favorite at home in week 1 of the college football season.

The Wolverines scored 30 points while compiling a total of 403 total yards offensively which included 281 passing yards and 122 rushing yards while allowing 3 points and 235 total yards defensively which included 132 passing yards and 103 rushing yards. J.J. McCarthy led the team in passing completing 26 of 30 attempts for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Blake Corum led the team in rushing with 11 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown while adding three receptions for five yards. Roman Wilson led the team in receiving, catching six of eight targets for 78 yards and three touchdowns.

BookMaker has the Michigan Wolverines listed as 37-point favorites at home against the UNLV Rebels on Saturday afternoon in week 1 of the college football season. These teams have only met one other time before this matchup which occurred in 2015 and resulted in a 28-7 win for the Michigan Wolverines at home, however, the UNLV Rebels scored the spread as a 32.5-point underdog.

UNLV is 1-0 ATS this season after finishing last season with a record of 7-5 ATS overall, 4-2 ATS on the road, and 4-2 ATS as an underdog while the Michigan Wolverines are 0-1 ATS overall, 0-1 ATS at home, and 0-1 ATS as a favorite this season after finishing the 2022 college football season with a record of 8-5-1 ATS overall, 4-3-1 ATS at home, and 7-5-1 ATS as a favorite.

Michigan will have no trouble getting a win at home against an inferior opponent, however, 37 points is a lot to give up against anyone and the Wolverines failed to cover the spread at home as a 36-point favorite. The Rebels covered the spread as a 32.5-point underdog the last time these two teams met on the gridiron and I look for that trend to continue on Saturday when the UNLV Rebels travel to take on the Michigan Wolverines which is why I am taking the Rebels +37 on BookMaker for this matchup in week 2 of the college football season.
