College Football Betting Preview: New Mexico Lobos vs Texas A&M Aggies

September 2, 2023

The New Mexico Lobos finished last season with a record of 2-10 and with a record of 0-8 in the Mountain West which led to a last-place finish in the Mountain Division of the Mountain West and the Lobos missing with a losing record for the 6th consecutive season.

The Lobos will have a new Offensive and Defensive Coordinator this season with Bryant Vincent becoming the new Offensive Coordinator and Troy Reffett becoming the new Defensive Coordinator. Vincent most recently served as the interim head coach for the UAB Blazers last season.

This year, the New Mexico Lobos enter the season with an over/under win total of 3.5 wins which is one of the lowest win totals in college football and means the Lobos are projected to miss a bowl game for the 7th consecutive year. Based on Vegas odds, New Mexico is projected to be the worst team in the Mountain West this season.

The Texas A&M Aggies entered last season with a lot of hype and were ranked in the Top 10 in the AP and Coaches Polls, however, the Aggies had a disappointing season finishing with a record of 5-7 and an SEC record of 2-6 which led to a tie for last place in the West Division of the SEC and the Aggies missing a bowl game for the first time since the 2008 college football season. After a disappointing season, Jimbo Fisher made a huge splash at Offensive Coordinator by hiring Bobby Petrino to take over after the firing of Darrell Dickey.

Petrino most recently served as the head coach for the Missouri State Bears. This season, the Texas A&M Aggies enter the season ranked 23rd in the AP Poll and 25th in the Coaches Poll with an over/under win total of 7.5 wins which means the Aggies are projected to become bowl-eligible after missing a bowl game last season. I look for the Aggies to surpass that win total this year.

Based on Vegas odds, the Texas A&M Aggies are projected to be the 4th best team in the SEC behind the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, and LSU Tigers and have 13th-best odds to win the National Championship as the Aggies are +6000 to accomplish that feat.

BookMaker has the Texas A&M Aggies listed as 38.5-point favorites at home against the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday in week 1 of the college football season. These teams have played each other four times before this matchup with the Aggies winning all four games and going 4-0 ATS in those games with the most recent game coming in 2021 which resulted in a 34-0 win for the Texas A&M Aggies and covered the 30-point spread as a favorite in the game.

New Mexico finished last season 3-8-1 ATS overall, 1-5 ATS on the road, and 2-7-1 ATS as an underdog while Texas A&M finished 4-7-1 ATS overall, 2-4-1 ATS at home, and 2-5 ATS as a favorite.

The Texas A&M Aggies had a disappointing season last year, however, I look for the Aggies to bounce back this season with a chance of winning the SEC West as they will have one of the best Offensive Coordinators in college football.

The Aggies have been the better team in the series, winning all four games and going 4-0 ATS all-time. I look for that trend to continue on Saturday in this matchup which is why I will be buying the .5 point and taking the Texas A&M Aggies -38 on BookMaker for this matchup on Saturday afternoon.
