College Football Betting Preview: Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Indiana Hoosiers
September 2, 2023
The Ohio State Buckeyes were one win away from playing in the National Championship game against the TCU Horned Frogs and looked like they were on their way to winning against Georgia as they had a 38-24 heading into the 4
th
quarter, however, the Buckeyes were outscored 3-18 in the 4
th
quarter with much of the blame riding on the injury to Marvin Harrison Jr. who is one of the most explosive players in college football and will be returning for his Junior year which may also be his final season in college football.
The Buckeyes are once again one of the favorites to win the National Championship as they have the 4
th
best odds to win the National Championship behind the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Michigan Wolverines and based on Vegas odds are the favorites to win the Big Ten Conference this season as they enter the season at +170 to win the Big Ten and have an over/under win total of 10.5 wins with their two toughest games coming at home against the Penn State Nittany Lions and on the road in their last game of the season against the Michigan Wolverines a team that has outscored them 87-50 over the past two seasons.
The Indiana Hoosiers finished with a record of 4-8 and a Big Ten Conference record of 2-7 which led to a 6
th
place finish in the East Division of the Big Ten Conference and the Hoosiers missing a bowl game for the 2
nd
season in a row with Tom Allen as head coach.
This season, the Hoosiers enter the year with an over/under win total of 4 wins which means they are projected to miss a bowl game for the 3
rd
consecutive year and if that happens Tom Allen may be fired as head coach. Based on Vegas odds, the Hoosiers are projected to be the 3
rd
worst team in the Big Ten Conference, only better than the Northwestern Wildcats and Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
BookMaker has the Ohio State Buckeyes listed as 30-point favorites on the road against the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday for week 1 of the college football season. Ohio State has dominated the series, winning the previous ten matchups in a row, however, Indiana has been the better team at covering the spread going 6-4 ATS in the last ten games in the series.
However, the Buckeyes have covered the spread in two of the last three games. Ohio State finished last season with a record of 6-6-1 ATS overall, 1-3 ATS on the road, 5-6-1 ATS as a favorite, and 4-4-1 ATS in conference games while Indiana finished 4-8 ATS overall, 3-4 ATS at home, 3-6 ATS as an underdog, and 4-5 ATS in conference games.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are the more talented team and have been the dominating team in the series, winning the previous ten games in a row. The Buckeyes are also favorites to win the Big Ten Conference and have the 4
th
best odds of winning the National Championship.
However, Indiana has been the better team at covering the spread in the last ten games of the series, going 6-4 ATS in those matchups. As a result, I am taking the Indiana Hoosiers +30 on BookMaker for this matchup in week 1 of the college football season.
