College Football Betting Preview: Oregon State Beavers vs San Jose State Spartans

September 3, 2023

The Oregon State Beavers finished last season with a record of 10-3 with a record of 6-3 in the Pac-12 Conference which led to a tie for 5th place in the Pac-12 and an appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl against the Florida Gators which resulted in a 30-3 win and the Beavers ending the season ranked 17th in both the AP and Coaches Polls.

This season, Oregon State enters the season ranked 18th in the AP Poll and 18th in the Coaches Poll with an over/under win total of 8.5 wins which means the Beavers are projected to go to a bowl game for the 3rd consecutive season and based on Vegas odds are projected to be the 5th best team in the Pac-12 behind the USC Trojans, Oregon Ducks, Washington Huskies, and Utah Utes.

San Jose State started the season off with a 28-56 loss on the road against the 6th-ranked USC Trojans last Saturday, however, the Spartans still covered the spread as 31.5-point underdogs. The Spartans scored 28 points and had 396 total yards, 198 passing yards, and 198 rushing yards in the loss.

Chevan Cordeiro led the team in passing completing 21 of 38 attempts for 198 yards and three touchdowns while adding 52 yards rushing. Quali Conley led the team in rushing with six carries for 109 yards while adding two receptions for 17 yards. Nick Nash led the team in receiving, catching six of eight targets for 89 yards and three touchdowns.

BookMaker has the Oregon State Beavers listed as 16.5-point favorites on the road against the San Jose State Spartans on Sunday in week 1 of the college football season. These teams have played each other two times before this matchup with the Beavers winning both games by an average score of 30.5 to 16.5 while both teams are 1-1 ATS in those contests with the most recent game coming in 2015 resulting in a 35-21 win for Oregon State as well as a 6.5-point cover for the Beavers.

Oregon State finished last season with a record of 11-2 ATS overall, 3-2 ATS on the road, and 8-1 ATS as a favorite while San Jose State is 1-0 ATS overall and 1-0 ATS as an underdog this season after finishing last season with a record of 4-8 ATS overall, 2-4 ATS at home, and 1-1 ATS as an underdog.

Oregon State is the more talented team this season as they enter this game ranked 18th in the AP and Coaches Polls and are projected to be a top 5 team in the Pac-12. The Beavers were one of the best teams at covering the spread last season going 11-2 ATS overall while the Spartans went 4-8 ATS overall.

I look for that trend to continue in this matchup which is why I am buying the .5 point and taking the Oregon State Beavers -16 on BookMaker for this matchup on Sunday afternoon in week 1 of the college football season.
