College Football Betting Preview: Texas Longhorns vs. BYU Cougars

October 28, 2023

The BYU Cougars will travel to Austin, Texas to face the 7th ranked Texas Longhorns in a battle of two Big 12 teams at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon in week 9 of the college football season with the game airing nationally at 3:30 PM ET on ABC.

BYU enters this game with a record of 5-2 following a 27-14 win at home against the Texas Tech Red Raiders while covering the 3-point spread as a home underdog by winning the game outright in week 8 of the college football season. The Cougars scored 27 points while compiling a total of 277 yards offensively which included 127 passing yards and 150 rushing yards while allowing 14 points and 389 total yards defensively which included 236 passing yards and 153 rushing yards. Kedon Slovis led the team in passing, completing 15 of 27 attempts for 127 yards and two touchdowns. LJ Martin led the team in rushing with ten carries for 93 yards. Darius Lassiter led the team in receiving, catching four of nine targets for 47 yards and a touchdown.

The Texas Longhorns enter this game ranked 7th in the AP Poll and 7th in the Coaches Poll with a record of 6-1 following a 31-24 win on the road against the Houston Cougars while failing to cover the 24-point spread as a road favorite in week 8 of the college football season. Texas scored 31 points while compiling a total of 360 yards offensively which included 219 passing yards and 141 rushing yards while allowing 24 points and 392 total yards defensively which included 378 passing yards and 14 rushing yards.

Quinn Ewers led the team in passing, completing 23 of 29 attempts for 211 yards and two touchdowns. Jonathon Brooks led the team in rushing with 20 carries for 99 yards while adding eight receptions for 51 yards. Xavier Worthy led the team in receiving, catching six of seven targets for 92 yards and a touchdown.

BookMaker has the Texas Longhorns listed as 18-point favorites at home against the BYU Cougars on Saturday afternoon in week 9 of the college football season. These teams have played each other three times with BYU winning two of those three meetings while going 3-0 ATS all-time in the series. The BYU Cougars are 3-4 ATS overall, 1-2 ATS on the road, 2-2 ATS as an underdog, and 2-2 ATS in conference games this season while the Texas Longhorns are 3-4 ATS overall, 1-2 ATS at home, 2-4 ATS as a favorite, and 2-2 ATS in conference games on the year.

Texas is the better team this season as they enter this game with a record of 6-1 while BYU has also been one of the best teams in the Big 12 with a record of 5-2. The Cougars have won two of the three games all-time in the series while also going 3-0 ATS all-time. I look for Texas to get the win, however, 18 points is too many points to give up against another solid team which is why I am taking the points with the BYU Cougars when they travel to face the Texas Longhorns.
