College Football Betting Preview: Texas Longhorns vs. Wyoming Cowboys

September 16, 2023

The 2-0 Wyoming Cowboys travel to take on the #4-ranked and 2-0 Texas Longhorns in week 3 of the college football season on Saturday night. Wyoming enters this game at 2-0 following wins at home against the Texas Tech Red Raiders by a score of 35-33 and against the Portland State Vikings by a score of 31-17 while the Texas Longhorns enter this game with a record of 2-0 following wins at home against the Rice Owls by a score of 37-10 and on the road against the Alabama Crimson Tide by a score of 34-24.

Will the Longhorns improve to 3-0 on the year with a blowout win or can the Cowboys keep the game closer than expected? Let’s take a closer look at how these teams are faring this season.

The Wyoming Cowboys enter this game with a record of 2-0 following a 31-17 win at home against the Portland State Vikings while failing to cover the 28-point spread as a home favorite in week 2 of the college football season. Wyoming scored 31 points while compiling 371 total yards offensively which included 201 passing yards and 170 rushing yards while allowing 17 points and 344 total yards defensively which included 254 passing yards and 90 rushing yards.

Andrew Peasley led the team in passing, completing 11 of 16 attempts for 201 yards with three touchdowns and an interception while rushing for 43 yards. Sam Scott led the team in rushing with 11 carries for 70 yards. Ayir Asante led the team in receiving, catching two of four targets for 78 yards and two touchdowns.

Texas enters this game ranked 4th in the AP Poll and 6th in the Coaches Poll with a record of 2-0 following a 34-24 win on the road against the Alabama Crimson Tide while covering the 7-point spread as a road underdog by winning the game outright. The Longhorns scored 34 points while compiling 454 total yards offensively which included 349 passing yards and 105 rushing yards while allowing 24 points and 362 total yards defensively which included 255 passing yards and 107 rushing yards.

Quinn Ewers led the team in passing, completing 24 of 38 attempts for three touchdowns while adding 15 rushing yards. Jonathan Brooks led the team in rushing with 14 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown while adding a reception for four yards. Ja’Tavion Sanders led the team in receiving, catching five of seven targets for 114 yards.

BookMaker has the Texas Longhorns listed as 29.5-point favorites at home against the Wyoming Cowboys on Saturday evening in week 3 of the college football season. Texas has won all three games in the series while Wyoming is 3-0 ATS in those matchups. Wyoming is 1-1 ATS overall and 1-0 ATS as an underdog this season while the Texas Longhorns are 1-1 ATS overall, 0-1 ATS at home and 0-1 ATS as a favorite.

Texas is the more talented team and has been the better team in the series, winning all three games all-time, however, Wyoming has been the better team at covering the spread going 3-0 ATS all-time in the series. I look for Texas to get the win, however, this is set up as a letdown game after the Longhorns defeated Alabama on the road last week which is why I am buying the .5 point and taking the Wyoming Cowboys +30 on BookMaker for this matchup on Saturday evening.
