College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans vs. Nevada Wolfpack

September 2, 2023

The Nevada Wolf Pack finished last season with a losing record for the first time since the 2017 college football season with a record of 2-10 and the Wolf Pack went winless in the Mountain West finishing in last place in the West Division with a record of 0-8.

This season, the Wolf Pack enter the year with an over/under win total of 4.5 wins which means they are projected to miss a bowl game for the 2nd consecutive season, something that hasn’t happened since the 2016-2017 seasons and based on Vegas odds are projected to be the 3rd worst team in the Mountain West only better than the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and New Mexico Lobos.

The USC Trojans looked explosive offensively last week against the San Jose State Spartans by winning by a score of 56-28, however, the Trojans failed to cover the 31.5-point spread. The Trojans scored 56 points in the win while gaining 501 total yards offensively, 341 passing yards, and 160 rushing yards, however, the defense was not as impressive as they allowed 28 points and failed to force a turnover against a team they should’ve easily defeated.

Caleb Williams led the team in passing completing 18 of 25 attempts with 278 yards and four touchdowns. Austin Jones led the team in rushing with six carries for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Tahj Washington led the team in receiving, catching both targets for 85 yards and a touchdown.

BookMaker has the USC Trojans listed as USC Trojans listed as 38-point favorites at home against the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday evening in week 1 of the college football season. This will be the first time in the history of these programs that they will face each other in college football.

Nevada finished last season with a record of 4-8 ATS overall, 3-3 ATS on the road, and 3-5 ATS as an underdog while USC finished 8-6 ATS overall, 5-2 ATS at home, and 7-6 ATS as a favorite, however, after last week the Trojans are 0-1 ATS overall, 0-1 ATS at home, and 0-1 ATS as a favorite this season.

The San Jose State Spartans were able to keep the game within the 31.5-point spread, however, they are projected to be the 6th best team in the Mountain West while Nevada is projected to be the 3rd worst. This week the Trojans are 38-point favorites at home and even though their defense was lackluster last week USC’s defense should look leap and bounds better against the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday evening. I would not be surprised at all to see the Trojans reach the 70-point mark offensively while allowing under 10 points to the Nevada Wolf Pack.

I look for Caleb Williams to have another big game against what should be one of the worst defenses he will face this season and a statement to be made by the defense of the Trojans against a poor offense in Nevada which is why I am taking the USC Trojans -38 at home against the Nevada Wolf Pack on BookMaker for this matchup on Saturday evening.
