College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans vs. San Jose Spartans

August 26, 2023

The college football season gets started this weekend, with a ranked game between the #6 ranked USC Trojans and the San Jose State Spartans. This game kicks off on Saturday Night at 8:00 PM under the bright lights of the LA Memorial Coliseum.

The San Jose State Spartans had a winning season last year and finished with a record of 7-5 and a record of 5-3 in the Mountain West which led to a tie for 2nd place in the West Division of the Conference. However, over their last four games of the season, the Spartans managed only one win which came against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors by a score of 27-14 before finishing with a loss in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl against the Eastern Michigan Eagles by a score of 27-41.

Meanwhile, the USC Trojans featured one of the most explosive offenses not only in the Pac-12 but in college football as they averaged over 41 points per game and had the Heisman-winning quarterback, Caleb Williams, under center. The Trojans were well on their way to the College Football Playoffs before losing to the Utah Utes in the Pac-12 Championship game by a score of 24-47 which led to them missing the playoffs and playing in the Cotton Bowl against the Tulane Green Wave, a game that was high-scoring, but ended up on a losing note by losing that game by a score of 45-46.

BookMaker has the USC Trojans listed as 30-point favorites against the San Jose State Spartans in a series that has only been played five times, however, the Trojans have won all five of those contests and have gone 3-2 ATS in those contests.

This season the San Jose State Spartans are expected to be a borderline bowl-eligible team as their over/under win total is 5.5 games. Meanwhile, the USC Trojans are expected to be one a National Championship contender with Caleb Williams returning as the quarterback. The Trojans enter the season +1224 to win the National Championship and +193 to win the Pac-12 Championship while having an over/under win total of 10 games.

The USC Trojans are clearly the more talented team and are playing at home against the San Jose State Spartans. A series that the Trojans have dominated winning all five games in the series by an average of 28.4 points while going 3-2 ATS in those matchups. The line is where I believe it should be as it is right around the 28.4-point margin that the series has seen.

However, unlike in years past, the talent disparity of the two teams has an even larger gap as the Trojans have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball including the Heisman favorite, Caleb Williams, who is +450 to repeat as the Heisman winner this season. Williams finished last season with 4,537 yards passing with 42 touchdowns with only five interceptions while adding 382 rushing yards and ten touchdowns.

Williams and the USC Trojans should once again feature one of the most dominating offenses in college football and I look to see that from their first game of the season when they take on the San Jose State Spartans in their first game of the season on Saturday night. As a result, I am taking the USC Trojans -30 on BookMaker for this matchup in week 0 of the college football season.
