Detroit Red Wings vs. Ottawa Senators

January 31, 2024

The Ottawa Senators will travel to Detroit, Michigan to face the Detroit Red Wings at the Little Caesars Arena with the game scheduled to start at 7:00 PM ET on Wednesday evening and will air on Bally Sports Detroit.

The Senators enter this game in last place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 19-25-2 and 40 points which also ties them with the Columbus Blue Jackets for last place in the Eastern Conference, however, they are coming off a 4-3 overtime win at home against the Nashville Predators on Monday which also ended their two-game losing streak. Ottawa has been an above-average team in terms of goals per game as they enter this game ranked 11th in the NHL with an average of 3.36 goals per game, however, that hasn’t come by their power-play unit as they rank 23rd in power-play success rate at 16.27%. Tim Stutzle has been one of the better players on the team as he leads the team in assists and points with 36 assists and 47 points.

Defensively, the Senators have been one of the worst teams in the NHL as they are allowing the 3rd most goals per game and have the 5th worst penalty-kill percentage at 73.65% while allowing an average of 3.67 goals per game. The Ottawa Senators will look to build off the momentum following the win against the Predators when they travel to face the Detroit Red Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings are in 5th place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 26-18-5 and 57 points which also gives them the 8th-best record in the Eastern Conference and are on a two-game winning streak following Saturday’s 5-2 win at home against the Vegas Golden Knights. The success of the Red Wings can be attributed to their offensive play as they are averaging the 5th most goals per game and rank 12th in power-play success rate with a power-play success rate of 22.83% and an average of 3.55 goals per game. Dylan Larkin has played a pivotal role in the success the offense has had for Detroit this season as he leads the team in goals and points with 22 goals and 46 points.

Defensively, the Red Wings have been below average as they rank 22nd in goals allowed per game with an average of 3.22 goals allowed per game, however, they have an above average penalty-kill percentage at 80.89% which ranks 12th in the league. The Detroit Red Wings will look to extend their winning streak to three games when they host the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday evening.

BookMaker has the Detroit Red Wings listed as -120 moneyline favorites at home against the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday evening. Ottawa has won eight of the last ten and two of the previous three meetings. The Senators have won by an average margin of 2.1 goals per game over the last ten and .67 goals per game in the last three games in the series.

Detroit has been the better team this season as they have the 8th best record in the Eastern Conference while Ottawa has been the worst team, however, Ottawa has been the dominant team in the series, winning eight of the previous ten and two of the last three contests. The Senators have won by an average margin of 2.1 goals per game over the last ten and .67 goals per game over the last three games in the series which is why I am taking the moneyline for the Ottawa Senators when they travel to face the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday evening.
