Edmonton Oilers vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

March 23, 2024

Two of the top 5 scoring teams in the NHL will face off against each other on Saturday evening when the Edmonton Oilers travel to Toronto, Ontario to face the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Scotiabank Arena with the game scheduled to start at 7:00 PM ET and will air on Root Sports North.

Edmonton Oilers Team Preview

With a 1st line of Zach Hyman and Connor McDavid, the Edmonton Oilers have one of the best lines in the NHL with both playing at a high level this season as Hyman enters this game tied for the 2nd most goals this season with 48 and Connor McDavid leading the league in assists with 86 and is 3rd in the NHL in points with 112.

The play from both players has led the Edmonton Oilers to be one of the highest-scoring teams in the league. The Oilers enter this game ranked 4th in the NHL in scoring with an average of 3.61 goals per game. Edmonton has also had a successful March as they have compiled a record of 7-1-2 this month and have dominated their opponents winning by two or more goals in four of the seven games and winning by an average margin of 3.14 goals per game including Thursday’s 8-3 win at home against the Buffalo Sabres which was their 2nd win in a row.

Edmonton won the only other meeting this season by a score of 4-2 and will look to sweep Toronto when they travel to face the Maple Leafs in the 2nd game of the series this season.

Toronto Maple Leafs Team Preview

The Maple Leafs are the 2nd highest-scoring team in the NHL this season and enter this matchup averaging 3.69 goals per game thanks in part to Auston Matthews who enters this game leading the league in goals with 57.

The Maple Leafs ended their two-game skid following Wednesday’s 7-3 win on the road against the Washington Capitals which improved their record this season to 39-20-9 and 87 points which puts them in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division and gives the Maple Leafs the 5th best record in the Eastern Conference. Toronto has compiled a record of 5-3-1 in March, however, the Maple Leafs have outscored their opponents by an average of 3.33 to 3 goals per game this month.

The Maple Leafs suffered a road loss against the Edmonton Oilers earlier this season by a score of 2-4 and will look to avoid being swept in the regular season series this season when they host the Oilers on Saturday evening.

Odds and Series Trends

BookMaker has the Edmonton Oilers listed as -135 moneyline favorites on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday evening. Edmonton won the meeting earlier this season at home by a score of 4-2, however, Toronto has won three of the last five in the series. The last five games in the series have been decided by multiple goals with the games being decided by an average margin of 2.8 goals per game.

Game Pick

Both teams are in the top 5 in scoring in the NHL with Toronto averaging the 2nd most and Edmonton averaging the 4 most, however, the Oilers have also been one of the better teams defensively allowing the 8th fewest goals per game with an average of 2.84 goals allowed per game. I look for Edmonton to sweep the regular season series against Toronto which is why I am taking the moneyline with the Edmonton Oilers when they travel to face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday evening.
