EFL Cup Betting Preview: Bournemouth vs Liverpool

November 1, 2023

Liverpool travel to face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in the League Cup fourth round on Wednesday night, 1 November 2023.

The Cherries had won their last home meeting against The Reds - a valuable 1-0 win in March - to eventually end Liverpool's seven-game winning streak over them.

Yet, Jurgen Klopp's side claimed a 3-1 win at Anfield in their first home game of the new campaign on August 19, though Alexis Mac Allister was sent off just before the hour mark.

Bournemouth were one of the two clubs who were yet to win a Premier League game before Matchday 10.

All in all, only bottom-place Sheffield United have scored fewer goals in the Premier League this season than Bournemouth's 8 (joint second worst record along with Crystal Palace and Burnley), and only two have conceded more - with Bournemouth conceding 21 goals in 10 games.

Andoni Iraola's men need to work harder in order to avoid the so-called "second-season syndrome" in the Premier League. The Cherries regained their top-flight status last year and managed to avoid relegation after a solid form in April, but the south coast outfit eventually decided to part ways with Gary O'Neil.

The Cherries claimed a 2-0 home win over Championship side Stoke City in the League Cup third round and are now bidding to build on their last performance.

Andoni Iraola's side have just secured their first league win of the season with a 2-1 comeback victory over fellow strugglers Burnley on Saturday afternoon. It was a huge relief for Bournemouth and their boss Andoni Iraola personally, who still has work to do if he is to handle the rising pressure on him.

Ghana international Antoine Semenyo restored the parity midway through the first half, while Danish midfielder Philip Billing scored his first goal of the season to complete the comeback in the 76th minute.

The victory over Burnley not only ended Bournemouth's four-game losing streak in the Premier League but it also lifted them out of the relegation zone. However, the upcoming three matches are quite challenging. After the League Cup clash with Liverpool, The Cherries travel to face reigning champions Manchester City next weekend before they host Newcastle United prior to the November international break.

Bournemouth kicked-off their League Cup campaign with a 3-2 victory at Swansea City in late-August. Ryan Christie's late winner sealed Andoni Iraola's first victory in England and the former Rayo Vallecano manager will hope to squeeze the full potential of his Scottish playmaker.

Dominic Solanke is set to lead the line as the ex-Liverpool striker is bidding to produce his most prolific campaign in the Premier League. The 26-year-old forward, who joined Bournemouth in January 2019, already boasts four goals in 10 league appearances and is just two goals away from leveling his best record in the English top-flight (he scored six goals in 33 Premier League games last season).

The Cherries will be without eight players for the League Cup clash on Wednesday night. Goalkeepers Neto and Darren Randolph, as well as the likes of Ryan Fredericks, Tyler Adams and Emiliano Marcondes are all injured, while Lewis Cook serves a three-game suspension.

Moreover, there are two further absentees, with neither Luis Sinisterra nor Mark Travers available for selection, having featured for Leeds United and Stoke City, respectively, in earlier rounds of the competition.

Summer signing Max Aarons was subbed off late in the Burnley game and the 23-year-old right-back is a doubt for the midweek clash with Liverpool.

Andoni Iraola, however, is boosted by the return to fitness of Marcos Senesi, who missed Saturday’s victory over Burnley. However, the Argentine defender may have to settle for a place on the bench.

David Brooks remained an unused substitute at the weekend and the Wales winger will be pushing for a start against Liverpool.

Liverpool Betting Preview (-200 at Everygame)

The Reds head to the South Coast on the back of a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon. Thus, they remain fourth in the Premier League table, three points behind current leaders Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool earned a 3-1 victory over Championship leaders Leicester City in the League Cup third round as the Reds continue to compete on multiple fronts.

Having won the League Cup title in 2022, Liverpool were dethroned at that stage (fourth round) last season, when they suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester City in their first match after the World Cup.

Even though they're not in the Champions League for the first time since 2016-17, Liverpool are now experiencing Europa League Thursdays as they are considered top favorites to win the trophy, way ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, AS Roma and fellow Premier League side Brighton.

By winning their opening three games in Group E of the Europa League group stage, Liverpool need only one win to pretty much secure the top spot as they can fully focus on their domestic campaign until February-March.

Jurgen Klopp's side will play away from Anfield for the first time since the international break as they accumulated three consecutive home wins over Everton, Toulouse and Nottingham Forest within nine days.

Mohamed Salah has scored six goals in his last four appearances for Liverpool in all competitions. All in all, The Egyptian forward has been directly involved in 12 goals (8 goals and four assists) in 10 league games this season.

Caoimhín Kelleher should start in goal while Jurgen Klopp is also expected to make wholesale changes to his starting line-up on Wednesday night.

Experienced Joel Matip and Academy youngster Jarell Quansah are set to be paired at centre-back, with teenager Luke Chambers eager for another start at left-back.

Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has offered an injury update on Tuesday. The Merseysiders remain without the injured midfielders Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic, as well as without Scotland left-back Andy Robertson, who recently underwent surgery on a dislocated shoulder and is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Luis Diaz has serious personal issues as his parents were kidnapped in Colombia and the winger was ruled out for Liverpool at the weekend. We strongly doubt that the Colombian will be in condition to play, given the current circumstances.

With Diaz sidelined and Cody Gakpo recently recovering from an injury, Jurgen Klopp will likely opt for the same attacking trio (Salah, Jota and Nunez) he named against Nottingham Forest on Sunday - all of whom have scored.

Meanwhile, youngsters Conor Bradley and Ben Doak are recovering from their respective injuries and the latter had just resumed training.

Curtis Jones is raring to go after serving a three-match suspension after being sent off against Tottenham Hotspur on September 30.

Possible Starting Lineups of Bournemouth and Liverpool

Bournemouth: Ionut Radu - Adam Smith, Ilya Zabarnyi, Chris Mepham, Milos Kerkez - Joe Rothwell, Philip Billing - Antoine Semenyo, Ryan Christie, Marcus Tavernier - Dominic Solanke. (4-2-3-1)

Spooky Express Betting Prediction

Liverpool have scored in each of their last 24 games across all competitions, since a goalless draw with Chelsea on April 4th. Their attacking mentality and the anticipated rotations in defense point to a high-scoring game.
