EPL Betting Preview: Burnley vs Everton

December 16, 2023

Burnley will be looking to stop an in-form Everton side at Turf Moor in Saturday's late kick-off.

When the two sides last met in the top-flight, The Clarets claimed a 3-2 comeback victory at Turf Moor in April 2022.

All in all, Burnley have won four of their last six home matches with Everton in the Premier League (4-1-1), while The Toffees are looking for their first victory at Turf Moor since a massive 5-1 success on Boxing Day 2018.

Everton already earned a 3-0 victory over Burnley at Goodison Park in the League Cup round of 16 last month with goals from James Tarkowski, Amadou Onana and veteran Ashley Young.

Having won just three points from their eight league games at Turf Moor, Burnley have the worst home record in the Premier League. Vincent Kompany's side have lost seven of their eight games at Turf Moor this season - something they must drastically improve from now on if they are to maintain their Premier League status.

After ending a humiliating and history-making seven-game losing streak at Turf Moor by crushing fellow strugglers Sheffield United 5-0 a fortnight ago, Burnley are now aiming to achieve back-to-back Premier League home wins for the first time since April 2022.

The 19th-placed Clarets are only off the foot of the table by virtue of goal difference, level on 8 points with Sheffield United, and are five points behind their current opponents, who are 17th, as things stand.

The Clarets earned a battling point against Brighton at the Amex last weekend, and have now taken four points from their last three top-light matches. Goalkeeper James Trafford made an astounding 10 saves - including an acrobatic stop to deny Kaoru Mitoma a stoppage-time winner and was the hero for Burnley.

Charlie Taylor picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign in Burnley's trip to the south coast last weekend and the left-back will serve his suspension against Everton.

Aaron Ramsey took a whack to the knee just 21 minutes after he was brought on as a second-half substitute at Brighton and the England U21 international will need to be assessed.

Josh Cullen is also on Burnley's touch-and-go list owing to a knock, while the likes of Jack Cork, Luca Koleosho and Lyle Foster are all unavailable for Vincent Kompany.

Sean Dyche's side are bidding for a fourth successive Premier League victory as they travel to face Dyche's former club - Burnley - on Saturday.

Looking at the table, you would easily say that Burnley host fellow relegation candidates Everton, but The Toffees have actually won seven of their 16 top-flight games this season - as many as Brighton and West Ham United did.

The Toffees are now four points clear of the bottom three despite their 10-point deduction. Without the deduction, Everton would've been in the top half of the table and Sean Dyche's men must be confident in their ability.

Everton will remain above the dotted line regardless of what happens elsewhere in gameweek 17, where Dyche could lead his side to four consecutive Premier League wins for the first time since December 2020 (when Everton won four in a row during Carlo Ancelotti's tenure).

They have to go even further back to November 2002 for the last time that Everton won four Premier League games without conceding a goal.

Sean Dyche's men will welcome Fulham in the League Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday but the Everton boss will most certainly prioritize the Premier League round, given that a potential defeat at Burnley could make the difference between both clubs just two points.

Centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite and midfielder Idrissa Gueye have both picked up their fifth bookings of the season against Chelsea last weekend, and the pair will have to sit this one out.

With Branthwaite suspended and Michael Keane initially a doubt for the weekend, Sean Dyche could have to turn to Ben Godfrey to fill the void at the heart of Everton’s backline. Having only been introduced as a last minute substitute against Sheffield United in early-September, Godfrey only played a substantial role in Everton's 2-1 League Cup win at Doncaster Rovers in August.

The Everton manager confirmed that Seamus Coleman and Ashley Young are sidelined along with Andre Gomes, who works on his fitness, and Dele Alli.

Ashley Young was substituted late in the first half of Everton's win against Chelsea so Nathan Patterson could start at right-back against Burnley.

But on a positive note, Sean Dyche revealed that experienced defender Michael Keane is in contention to take Branthwaite’s berth, having been an injury doubt. Moreover, Dyche also stated that both Vitalii Mykolenko and Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be fit to face Burnley.

Belgian midfielder Amadou Onana returned to action after he sustained a calf injury during last month's international break. Onana scored the second goal when Everton stunned Burnley at Goodison Park last month and the 22-year-old midfielder is pushing for his first start since the 3-2 win at Crystal Palace on November 11.

Elsewhere, youngster Lewis Dobbin scored his first goal for Everton in the 2–0 victory against Chelsea. The 20-year-old winger was introduced as a late substitute and made an instant impact to seal his side's third consecutive victory.

With his goals in recent victories against Newcastle and Chelsea, Abdoulaye Doucouré has been the leading attacking threat for The Toffees this term. The Mali international had scored six goals in 16 league starts, including three match-opening goals.

Possible Starting Lineups of Burnley and Everton

  • Burnley: James Trafford - Vitinho, Dara O'Shea, Jordan Beyer, Hannes Delcroix - Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Sander Berge, Josh Brownhill, Wilson Odobert - Jay Rodriguez, Zeki Amdouni. (4-4-2)

  • Everton: Jordan Pickford - Nathan Patterson, James Tarkowski, Ben Godfrey, Vitalii Mykolenko - Jack Harrison, Amadou Onana, James Garner, Dwight McNeil - Abdoulaye Doucoure - Dominic Calvert-Lewin. (4-4-1-1)

The Toffees will head to Lancashire with the aim of recording their fourth straight Premier League success. The wins over Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and Chelsea have all been accompanied by a clean sheet and Sean Dyche will be keen to extend that excellent run of form since the 3-0 home loss to Manchester United.

Since the 2023-24 campaign commenced, Sean Dyche's men have only fallen short away from home against Aston Villa and arch rivals Liverpool. Thus, they boast the fifth-best away record in the Premier League and we're backing another favorable result for Everton.

Everton's coherence should prove too hot for the Clarets to handle, plunging their future into fresh doubt as the Lancashire outfit have lost seven of their eight home games in the Premier League this term.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is yet to score since he bagged the winner in Everton's 1-0 victory at West Ham United on 29 October and the Toffees' no.9 will be eager to break his scoring drought. Calvert-Lewin missed the trip to Nottingham Forest earlier this month but he was fine to start the back-to-back home matches with Newcastle and Chelsea.
