EPL Betting Preview: Newcastle United vs. West Ham United

October 8, 2023

West Ham United return to Premier League action on Sunday when they host Newcastle United at the London Stadium.

Newcastle United claimed an impressive 5-1 victory at the London Stadium when the sides' last met in April.

The Hammers, on the other hand, will be looking for their first league win against Newcastle since August 2021.

David Moyes' men were more clinical to outscore Freiburg at the Europa-Park Stadion on Thursday night as they sit top of Group A, winning their opening two games.

The East London outfit traveled to Germany in midweek as they claimed a 2-1 win over Bundesliga side Freiburg in the Europa League. Nayef Aguerd's second-half header sealed the win for West Ham with James Ward-Prowse providing his sixth assist of the season for West Ham.

Thus, West Ham United are on a three-game winning streak across all competitions and The Hammers are keen to build on against a tricky Newcastle side.

Having been directly involved in eight goals (two goals and six assists) in as many appearances for West Ham since joining the club in August, Ward-Prowse is one of the players who can possibly inspire West Ham United on Sunday as the 28-year-old midfielder was once again snubbed by England boss Gareth Southgate.

David Moyes will make a late fitness call on key striker Michail Antonio ahead of Sunday's clash with Newcastle United. The West Ham United boss has admitted that he is yet to see the 33-year-old Jamaica international in training this week. If Antonio is not fully fit to play from the beginning, Bowen could lead the line.

Mohammed Kudus will also be pushing for his first league start since the Ghanaian winger joined the Europa Conference League champions over the summer. Kudus was a starter in the Europa League matches with TSC Backa Topola (where he scored a brace) and Freiburg, as well as in the 1-0 League Cup win at Lincoln City last month.

Full-backs Ben Johnson and Aaron Cresswell also missed the midweek trip to Freiburg and are not expected to feature against the Magpies as they continue their respective recoveries from groin and hamstring injuries.

Eddie Howe's side will be out to continue a strong run of form when they head to the capital for a crunch Premier League clash against West Ham United on Sunday.

The Magpies take on the Hammers off the back of a 4-1 thrashing over French giants PSG on Tuesday night and will be hoping to carry the form and momentum into this weekend.

Eddie Howe is currently in his third season in charge of the North East outfit after taking over in October 2021.

Howe ensured The Geordies stayed up in his first campaign under the new ownership, before reaching the League Cup final and cementing a fourth-place finish in the Premier League in his first full season to remarkably bring Champions League football back to St James’ Park for the first time since 2003.

How things have changed over the past two years. When Eddie Howe joined Newcastle United in November 2021, the North East giants were fighting to avoid relegation while two years later - they produced an electric performance to outclass Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday. Indeed, Newcastle United achieved a historic victory over the Ligue 1 powerhouse.

The Magpies entered the September international break on a three-game losing streak but they have been doing much better after that. Eddie Howe's side kept five consecutive clean sheets before their 4-1 win over PSG and no one would blame them for that goal conceded in one of their greatest victories.

Meanwhile, it has been announced that playmaker Bruno Guimaraes signed a new five year deal with Newcastle United. The Brazilian has been the midfield maestro behind their amazing progress under Eddie Howe and will play a pivotal role in their bid to compete on multiple fronts.

Sven Botman is still recovering from a knee injury as the Netherlands defender missed the last three games. Botman will, unfortunately, miss out again as will the long-term absentee Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon, who is suspended.

It remains to be seen whether Eddie Howe plans more changes for the weekend. He will be forced to reshuffle his attacking line, though.

Anthony Gordon will serve a one-game suspension as the England U21 hero received his fifth yellow card of the season during Newcastle's 2-0 win over Burnley last time out.

Gordon (two goals and two assists in seven league starts) established himself as a key figure for Newcastle this season. The 22-year-old winger arrived at St. James' Park in January but he was mostly a substitute last term.

The Newcastle boss will make a late decision on Joelinton and Callum Wilson’s availability after the pair missed the win over PSG in midweek through injury.

Spooky Express Betting Prediction

Both sides have scored in their last five meetings and there were five or more goals scored in three of those games.

Newcastle are unbeaten in their last four visits to the London Stadium, winning three of them, and we're backing them to build on their fine form.

Moreover, The Magpies will have had an extra day to recover from their European exploits and they can stretch their winning sequence to five games in the English capital. West Ham have the firepower to cause trouble to Newcastle’s defense, but we expect Eddie Howe's men to eventually outscore them.
