Florida St Seminoles vs. Virginia Tech Hokies

March 13, 2024

Round 2 of the ACC tournament will start on Wednesday afternoon when the 9th-seed Florida State Seminoles face the 8th-seed Virginia Tech Hokies. The tournament is taking place in Washington, D.C., at the Capital One Arena. The game is scheduled to start at 12:00 PM ET and air on ESPN.

Florida State Seminoles Team Preview

The Florida State Seminoles had a solid start to their season with a record of 4-1 before losing four games in a row and dropping to under .500.

Then, they had a strong start in conference play, winning five of their first six and six of their first eight games before losing eight of their final 12 games in the regular season. However, the Seminoles won their final game in the regular season against the Miami Hurricanes at home by scoring 83-75 and finishing in a tie with the Virginia Tech Hokies for 8th place in the ACC with a conference record of 10-10.

Florida State will need to make a deep run if they get a bid for the NCAA Tournament, and the Seminoles will need help to accomplish that. Even with a win against the Hokies on Wednesday, they would also need a win in the ACC Quarterfinals against North Carolina and likely another victory in the ACC Semifinals to get the bid for the tournament this season. If that doesn’t happen, the Seminoles will miss the game for the 3rd consecutive season.

The Seminoles were one of the worst defensive teams in college basketball this season, ranking 289th nationally in points allowed per game with an average of 75.83 points allowed per game, and will face an above-average scoring team in the 2nd round of the ACC tournament when they face the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Virginia Tech Hokies Team Preview

The Virginia Tech Hokies enter the ACC Tournament on the bubble to receive a bid for the 2024 NCAA Tournament. They will need to win in their second-round matchup in the ACC Tournament and will more than likely win another in the ACC Quarterfinals against the North Carolina Tar Heels on Thursday.

The Hokies had a solid finish to their regular season, finishing on a three-game winning streak with wins against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons by a score of 87-76, the Louisville Cardinals by a score of 80-64, and in their regular-season finale against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish by a score of 82-76. This improved their conference record to .500 at 10-10 and an overall record of 18-13.

Virginia Tech split the two meetings with the Florida State Seminoles this season, with both teams winning at home. However, the Hokies only lost by three points on the road while winning at home by a score of 83-75. Virginia Tech was an above-average team offensively this season, ranking 147th nationally in scoring with an average of 74.73 points per game. It was also an above-average team defensively, ranking 130th nationally in points allowed with an average of 70.4 points allowed per game.

The Hokies will look to improve their NCAA Tournament chances when they face the Florida State Seminoles in the 2nd round of the ACC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

Odds and Series Trends

JustBet has the Virginia Tech Hokies listed as 3-point favorites against the Florida State Seminoles in the 2nd round of the ACC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The teams split the two meetings this season, with each team winning at home. However, Virginia Tech has won three of the last four games in the series and has covered the spread in three matchups.

Game Pick

Despite both teams finishing .500 in the ACC this season, the Virginia Tech Hokies were the better team this season and only lost by three points on the road in the first matchup while winning by eight points at home in the 2nd, which improved their record to 3-1 against the Seminoles over the last four games in the series. I look for the Virginia Tech Hokies to enhance their chances for an NCAA bid with a win against the Florida State Seminoles in the 2nd round of the ACC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon and will be taking the moneyline of the Hokies in the matchup.
