Horse Racing Picks by Dietz for Gulfstream Park's

February 3, 2024

This is a really good card today. The weather looks good as well. I am hitting the turf races as usual.

Race 2 - TURF

  • 1 - STRAIGHT ARROW - Lopez/Dimi. Grade 2 racing horse drops down to this OC 25K race. Paco Lopez on a closing horse on turf is lethal and this one is in good form. Top 2.

  • 5 - ALLEY OOP JOHNNY - Gaffalione/Drexler.   This is a “horse for course” angle. Rate and closer who should no doubt be a factor here.

  • 6 - ALEXIS ZORBA - Seaz/Maker.  We bet this horse first off the layoff at Saratoga last summer and he got second. Has not done much to give me confidence here. Exotics only.

Race  5

  • 1 - FREDO - Alvarado/Sano. Ultra-consistent horse for the money. We bet on this one last week and won with exotics. Top three at nice odds.

  • 2 - MY SEA COTTAGE - Irad/Casse. Big drop in class here and a first-off layoff. Has back class to make this look easy and Irad will only help.

  • 6 - ROTTERDAM - Zayas/Nicks. I would love to see Gaffalione on this horse. The horse just got better and better with every race producing an 81 Beyer last out. Top 3.

Race 8 - THE SWEETEST CHANT - Grade 3 - TURF

  • 1 - LIFES AN AUDIBLE - Irad/Pletcher.  Red hot combo. Second off layoff. Horse just missed last out rallying for second from dead last. Major threat. Lean to win.

  • 3 - STYLE POINTS - Gaffalione/Clement. Third career start. Broke maiden last out. Pace pressure will be the issue. Use in exotics.

  • 6 - DYNAMIC PRICING - Jose/Brown.  Nobody places his horses better than Brown. Stakes race off the maiden win. He must see something here. Rate and closer.

Race 11 - THE KITTEN’S JOY - Grade 3 - TURF

  • 5 - DEAD PAN - Johnny V/Casse. Johnny has been riding awful, but this is a rate and closer who took to this turf last out. Pace is the issue; this one needs a moderate pace.

  • 8 - FREEDOM PRINCIPAL - Lopez/Garofalo. Risky wager taking a tapeta horse to turf for the first time, but this trainer hits at 25% doing so. I would take a shot in exotics cause you are not going to beat the nine-horse.

  • 9 - NOTED - Irad/Pletcher.  Here we go again with Irad.  Deep closer who closed with ease to win last out at 7 1/2F. Stretches out a little more today. WINNER!

Race 12 - THE HOLY BULL - Grade 3 -  DIRT

Major Derby prep here. Points are available for top finishers to qualify for Derby points.

  • 1 - HADES - Lopez/Orseno. The third race of the form cycle stretched out from 5 ½ to 7 to 1  1/16 now.  Paced and drew off each time. Concern is the pace of the favorite who can put this away. This may fade hard if pressed early.

  • 6 - DOMESTIC PRODUCT - Gaffalione/Brown. Toss out the last race that was in the slop. Drew off to win easily while breaking the maiden before that at the distance of 1 mile.  Should do the same today. Only possible threat I see.

  • 7 - FIERCENESS - Johnny V/Pletcher.  The 105 Beyer last out is crazy. That was in the Breeders Cup Juvenile. This horse might run them off their feet early and cruise home.  WINNER!

***SPECIAL ADDED PLAY***

OAKLAWN PARK - Race 11 - THE SOUTHWEST STAKES - Grade 3 - DIRT

I have a horse from my virtual stable running here. 2/2 career start and his last race was with a complete hand ride. Third place horse in that race went on to win a minor stakes next out so he faced some competition.

  • 7 - CARBONE    - Santana/Asmussen.   WINNER!!!!!!!!
