MLB Betting Preview: Boston Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

August 26, 2023

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been the hottest team in baseball in August compiling a record of 20-3 and on a three-game winning streak which includes a 7-4 win on the road against the Boston Red Sox in game one of the series on Friday. Three of the seven runs came in the 7th inning when Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman scored off a double hit by Max Muncy.

The Boston Red Sox may not have a chance to win the AL East this season, however, Boston is still in the playoff picture as they trail the Houston Astros by 3.5 games for the final Wild Card spot in the American League. The Red Sox saw their two-game winning streak come to an end when they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers at home on Friday by a score of 4-7. Trevor Story hit a two-run home run in the 2nd inning that also scored Triston Casas while Alex Verdugo hit a one-run home run in the 1st inning.

BookMaker has the Los Angeles Dodgers listed as -130 money line favorites on the road against the Boston Red Sox for game two of the series on Saturday. The teams have split the last ten games of the series with both going 5-5, however, Boston has outscored Los Angeles by an average of 5.1 to 5 runs per game over the last ten while the Dodgers have won the previous three matchups in a row by an average margin of 5 runs per game.

Game 2 of the series should feature a decent pitching matchup as the Dodgers will be sending Julio Urias while the Red Sox will be sending James Paxton to the mound. Urias is 11-6 this season with a 4.15 ERA while recording 104 strikeouts while Paxton is 7-4 with an ERA of 3.79 and has recorded 97 strikeouts.

Julio Urias has yet to face the Red Sox in his career, however, he will be making his first start against Boston in game two of the series on Saturday. Urias is 3-0 in his last three starts while allowing four runs and striking out 13 in those games.

James Paxton is 1-0 with a no-decision in his last two games against the Dodgers while allowing a total of seven runs and striking out 17, however, his last outing against Los Angeles occurred back in 2019 that resulted in a while after allowing two runs and striking out 11 in the contest.

Los Angeles has been the hottest team this month and has been the better team this season as they have the 2nd best record in the National League and the 3rd best record in the MLB. The Dodgers have won the previous three matchups in the series by an average margin of 5 runs per game and I look for that trend to continue in this matchup which is why I will be taking the money line for the Los Angeles Dodgers at -130 on BookMaker for this matchup on Saturday afternoon.
