MLB Betting Preview: Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners

August 23, 2023

The Seattle Mariners have been one of the hottest teams in baseball in August as they have compiled a record of 16-4 and are on an eight-game winning streak which includes winning the first two games of the series on the road against the Chicago White Sox in which they have outscored Chicago 20-5 in the series including a 6-3 win in game two on Tuesday. Josh Rojas was the only Mariner to hit a home run in the game, which was a two-run shot in the 4th inning that also scored Mike Ford.

The Chicago White Sox were expected to have a bounce-back season this year, instead they are virtually eliminated from the playoffs discussion as they have an overall record of 49-77 which is the 3rd worst record in the AL, and are 22 games back of the Seattle Mariners for the final Wild Card Spot. The only chance Chicago has of making the playoffs is winning the AL Central which is also a dubious task as they are 16 games back of the Minnesota Twins in the division. The White Sox are also on a two-game losing streak which includes Tuesday’s 3-6 loss against the Seattle Mariners in game two of the series. Andrew Benintendi was the only player to hit a home run for the White Sox in the game which came in the 9th inning.

Seattle has the advantage at pitcher in this contest as they will send George Kirby to the mound for game three of the series. Kirby is 10-8 this season with a 3.23 ERA while recording 133 strikeouts. Michael Kopech will take the mound for Chicago on Wednesday. Kopech is 5-11 on the year with an ERA of 5.12 and has recorded 117 strikeouts.

This will be George Kirby’s first start against the Chicago White Sox as this is rookie season which should also give him a slight advantage as none of the batters for the White Sox have faced him.

Michael Kopech has only faced the Mariners twice in his career with both games resulting in no decisions. Kopech allowed a total of 5 runs and struck out eight in those games with the most recent matchup coming in June of this season in which he allowed one run and struck out four, however, the White Sox lost the game 2-3.

BookMaker has the Seattle Mariners listed as -220 money line favorites on the road against the Chicago White Sox for game three of the series on Wednesday afternoon. Seattle has won six of the last ten and has won by an average score of 5.1 to 3.1 while also winning the previous three matchups in a row by an average score of 8.33 to 2. Seattle is the better team this season and has been a dominant team over the previous three games in the series winning all three by an average margin of 6.33 runs per game. There is no reason to believe that trend won’t continue in this matchup which is why I am taking the run line for the Seattle Mariners at -1.5 on BookMaker for game three of the series on Wednesday afternoon.
