MLB Betting Preview: Houston Astros vs. Kansas City Royals
September 24, 2023
The Kansas City Royals aren’t going to finish with the worst record in baseball, however, they also aren’t going to get above their win total of 68.5 wins as they have a record of 53-102. Houston is still in a tightly contested AL West division race with the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners, a race that is likely to come down to the last day of the regular season. The Royals will be looking for the series sweep on the road after winning the first two games including Saturday’s 2-3 win in game two. Will the Royals complete the series sweep on the road or will the Astros end their two-game losing streak? Let’s take a look at how these teams have fared this season.
Kansas City is going to avoid finishing with the worst record in the American League as the Royals have a five-game lead over the Oakland Athletics. The Royals weren’t a good team this year with over 100 losses and even failing to live up to the minimal expectations they had this season as they won’t go over their win total of 68.5 they had entering the season. The Royals have compiled a record of 12-8 in September and are on a five-game winning streak which includes a 3-2 win on the road against the Houston Astros in game two of the series. Two of the runs for the Kansas City Royals came in the 5
th
inning which included Kyle Isbel scoring off a wild pitch.
The Houston Astros have struggled against one of the worst teams in the MLB as they have dropped the first two games of the series against the Kansas City Royals including a 2-3 loss on Saturday. Houston has compiled a record of 8-12 in September and is on a two-game losing streak which includes game two’s loss against the Royals. Chas McCormick accounted for one of the runs when he hit a one-run home run in the 7
th
inning.
BookMaker has the Houston Astros listed as -180 money line favorites at home against the Kansas City Royals for game three of the series on Sunday afternoon. The teams have split the last ten games, however, Houston has outscored Kansas City by an average of 5.6 to 5.1 runs per game in those matchups while the Royals have won two of the last three games while the Astros have outscored the Royals by an average of 4 to 3.67 runs per game in those contests.
Kansas City will send Anthony Veneziano to the mound while Houston will send Hunter Brown to the mound for game three of the series on Sunday afternoon. Veneziano will be making his major league debut while Brown is 11-12 on the year with an ERA of 4.87 and has recorded 174 strikeouts.
Hunter Brown is 1-2 in his last three starts this season while allowing a total of 13 runs while recording 17 strikeouts in those matchups with his last start coming at home against the Baltimore Orioles in which Brown allowed seven runs and struck out five batters in a loss.
Houston is the better team this season, however, Kansas City has been the better team most recently in the series, winning two of the last three games. As a result, I am taking the run line for the Kansas City Royals at +1.5 on BookMaker for this matchup on Sunday afternoon.
Spooky Express Pick: Kansas City Royals Run Line +1.5 (-135)
