MLB Betting Preview: Miami Marlins vs. San Diego Padres

August 23, 2023

The Miami Marlins ended their three-game losing streak by defeating the San Diego Padres on the road in game two of the series on Tuesday by a score of 3-0, however, over their previous seven matchups the Marlins have only managed to win two of the games. All three of the runs for the Marlins came in the 3rd inning which included a one-run home run hit by Jorge Soler for the first run of the game for Miami.

San Diego has been the most disappointing team in the NL this season in a year in which they were supposed to challenge the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West title they have faltered in doing so and are unlikely to make the playoffs as they currently sit with a record of 60-67 and suffered their 3rd shutout loss in August and their 11th shutout loss overall this season in game two of the series against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday.

The Padres entered the season with an over/under win total of 83.5 games and it is almost certain that they will not reach that number as they would have to win 24 of their last 35 games of the season.

Sandy Alcantara has been one of the most disappointing starting pitchers this season in baseball after finishing with a record of 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA and 207 strikeouts last season Alcantara has had a major regression this year as he has a record of 6-10 with a 4.11 ERA while recording 141 strikeouts. In his last three starts against the Padres, Alcantara has gone 1-1 with a no-decision while allowing a total of 6 runs and recording 15 strikeouts in those contests. However, Alcantara has shown improvement in his last two games recording wins in both while allowing a total of four runs and striking out 16.

Seth Lugo may have a below-average record, however, he is still having a better season than San Alcantara as he enters this matchup with a record of 4-6 with an ERA of 3.92 and has recorded 103 strikeouts.

BookMaker has the San Diego Padres listed as -117 money line favorites at home against the Miami Marlins for game three of the series on Wednesday and has set the total for the over/under at 8 runs. The teams have split the series 5-5 over the last ten games, however, San Diego has outscored Miami by an average of 4.2 to 3.2 runs per game in those matchups.

The Padres have a slight edge over the last three games winning two of the last three by an average score of 5.33 to 2. San Diego is still a more talented team even though the Padres have not lived up to their potential this season and Alcantara has been a disaster for the Marlins this season which is why I am giving a slight edge to the Padres and taking the money line for San Diego at -117 at home against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday afternoon for game three of the series on BookMaker.
