MLB Betting Preview: Philadelphia Phillies vs Milwaukee Brewers

September 3, 2023

If the season ended today, the Philadelphia Phillies would be the 1st team in the Wild Card spot in the National League as the Phillies have a 2.5-game lead over the Chicago Cubs for the top Wild Card spot in the NL with a record of 74-61, however, the Phillies have virtually been eliminated from the NL East title as Philadelphia is 16 games behind the Atlanta Braves for 1st place in the division. The Philadelphia Phillies are on a three-game losing streak which includes a 5-7 loss on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers in game two of the series on Saturday. Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and J.T. Realmuto hit one-run home runs in the loss against the Brewers in game two of the series.

The Milwaukee Brewers have been one of the hottest teams in baseball entering this matchup as the Brewers have won 11 of their previous 13 games including the first two games of the series against the Philadelphia Phillies and will be looking for the 3-0 series sweep after winning game two of the series on Saturday by a score of 7-5. Carlos Santana accounted for two of the runs when he hit a two-run home run in the 5th inning which also scored William Contreras. The Brewers enter this matchup with a record of 76-59 which gives them a 4.5-game lead over the Chicago Cubs for 1st place in the NL Central.

BookMaker has the Philadelphia Phillies listed as -115 money line favorites on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday for game three of the series. Milwaukee has won six of the last ten including the previous four matchups in a row in the series while winning by an average margin of 2.67 runs per game in the last three games.

Milwaukee has the advantage at pitcher on Sunday as the Brewers will send Wade Miley to the mound while the Phillies will send Ranger Suarez to the mound for game three of the series. Miley is 7-3 this season with a 3.17 ERA while recording 60 strikeouts while Suarez is 2-6 on the year with an ERA of 3.88 and has recorded 89 strikeouts.

Ranger Suarez has not factored into a decision in his two starts against the Brewers in his career while allowing a total of three runs and recording nine strikeouts in those matchups with the most recent start coming last season in which Suarez allowed two runs and struck out five in a no-decision.

In his last three starts against Philadelphia, Wade Miley is 2-0 with a no-decision while allowing a total of seven runs and recording 21 strikeouts in those contests with the most recent start coming in 2021 in which Miley allowed four runs and struck out seven in a no-decision.

Milwaukee enters this game with a better record and has been the better team in the series, winning six of the last ten including the previous four matchups in a row while winning by an average margin of 2.67 runs per game in the last three games. I look for that trend to continue in game three of the series on Sunday and for the Milwaukee Brewers to come away with the series sweep which is why I am taking the money line for the Milwaukee Brewers at -105 on BookMaker for this matchup on Sunday afternoon.
