New York Mets vs. San Diego Padres

June 16, 2024

Game 3 of the three-game weekend series between the San Diego Padres and New York Mets will take place on Sunday afternoon. The San Diego Padres will travel to Flushing, New York, to face the New York Mets at Citi Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:40 PM ET and will air on the MLB Network and Padres TV.

San Diego Padres Team Preview

The Padres have struggled to produce runs during the series against the Mets, as they have only scored two and allowed seven runs against New York following Saturday's 1-5 loss in Game 2.

The loss dropped the record for San Diego to .500 at 37-37; however, they are still in 2nd place in the NL West, but they trailed the Los Angeles Dodgers by seven games to 1st place in the division. The loss in Game 2 was the 2nd straight loss in the series for the Padres against the Mets and their 6th loss in their last ten matchups against New York.

They have been outscored by the Mets by an average of 3.1 to 3.6 runs per game in the last ten while being outscored in the previous three meetings by an average of 2.67 to 3 runs per game. The lone run for San Diego in Game 2 was scored in the 5th inning when Jackson Merrill hit a one-run home run.

The San Diego Padres will look to end their two-game losing streak in the series and avoid their 2nd series sweep this month when they travel to face the New York Mets for Game 3.

New York Mets Team Preview

The New York Mets have been on fire over their past ten games as they have compiled a record of 8-2 during that stretch and are on a four-game winning streak following Saturday's 5-1 win at home against the San Diego Padres in Game 2 of the series.

The Mets have allowed two or fewer runs in their previous three matchups, including Jose Quintana's phenomenal start against the Padres on Saturday, in which he recorded a quality start after pitching six innings and only allowing one run while recording six strikeouts.

The Mets were helped out in the 4th inning after scoring three runs, which included a two-run home run hit by J.D. Martinez, who also scored Brandon Nimmo. However, the Mets remain five games below .500 despite winning eight of their last ten games, which puts them in 4th place in the NL East, only ahead of the Miami Marlins, and gives them the 3rd worst record in the National League, only better than the Miami Marlins and Colorado Rockies.

The Mets will look to complete their 2nd series sweep this month and their 4th this season when they host the San Diego Padres for Game 3 of the series on Sunday.
