NFL Betting Preview: Atlanta Falcons vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

August 24, 2023

The Pittsburgh Steelers will look to end the preseason undefeated after winning their first two preseason games on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by a score of 27-17 and at home against the Buffalo Bills by a score of 27-15.

The Steelers have looked good on both sides of the ball averaging 27 points per game while also averaging 285.5 total yards, 210.5 passing yards, and 106.5 rushing yards per game. In a limited role this preseason Kenny Pickett has also looked stellar completing 9 of 11 attempts for 113 yards and a touchdown while also having a passer rating of 149.1. Jaylen Warren has led all Steeler running backs with 75 yards on four carries while adding a touchdown. Calvin Austin has been the most productive receiver with 85 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Pittsburgh is allowing an average of 16 points per game while allowing an average of 330.5 total yards, 271 passing yards, and 69 rushing yards in the preseason.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons have not lost a game but do have a tie in the preseason following a 13-13 tie at home against the Cincinnati Bengals last week which followed their 19-3 win on the road against the Miami Dolphins in week 1 of the NFL preseason.

The Atlanta Falcons are averaging 16 points per game in the preseason with an average of 309 total yards, 223 passing yards, and 109 rushing yards per game. Logan Woodside leads the team in passing completing 18 of 29 attempts for 204 yards and a passer rating of 83.1.

Godwin Igwebuike leads the team in rushing with 27 carries for 131 yards and a touchdown. Xavier Malone leads the team in receiving with four receptions for 83 yards.

Atlanta is allowing an average of 8 points per game, 298.5 total yards, 195.5 passing yards, and 125.5 rushing yards per game in the preseason this year

BookMaker has the Pittsburgh Steelers listed as 4.5-point favorites on the road against the Atlanta Falcons and has set the total for the over/under plays at 38.5 points.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have looked like the better team in the preseason as they are undefeated while the Falcons have not lost a game but they are 1-0-1. The Steelers have been the dominant team over the last eight games in the series going 6-1-1, however, both teams are 4-4 ATS in those matchups.

Pittsburgh has also been the better team in the last three games in the series winning all three and going 3-0 ATS while winning by an average margin of 11.33 points per game. Neither team is expected to be great this year, however, I believe out of the two teams the Steelers are slightly more talented than the Falcons.

I look for that to be the case in this matchup as well which is why I am buying the .5 point and taking the Pittsburgh Steelers -4 on BookMaker for this matchup on Thursday evening. I also look for the matchup to be low-scoring based on how both teams have played defensively and would recommend buying the .5 point and taking the under 39 points for this matchup as well.

Spooky Express Picks: Steelers -4, Under 39 Points
