NFL Betting Preview: Cincinnati Bengals vs. Kansas City Chiefs

December 31, 2023

A rematch of the previous two AFC Championships will take place on Sunday afternoon when the Cincinnati Bengals travel to Kansas City, Missouri to face the Kansas City Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium with the game kicking off at 4:25 PM ET on Sunday afternoon and will be the Game of the Week on CBS in week 17 of the NFL season.

The Cincinnati Bengals are in last place in the AFC North with a record of 8-7 and saw their three-game winning streak come to an end with an 11-34 loss on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week 17 of the NFL season while the Steelers also swept the Bengals this year with the win. The Bengals have been one of the worst scoring defenses in the NFL as they enter this game allowing an average of 23 points per game which ranks 23rd in the NFL while also ranking 20th in the NFL in points per game with an average of 21.2 points per game, however, Cincinnati has an above-average passing offense as they enter this game averaging 239.4 passing yards per game.

Despite missing the previous four games, Joe Burrow still has a sizable lead as the leading passer for the Bengals as he enters this game having completed 244 of 365 attempts for 2,309 yards with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions while Ja’Marr Chase has been the main beneficiary of the passing offense as he leads the team in receiving with 93 receptions for 1,156 yards and seven touchdowns. The Cincinnati Bengals will look to bounce back following the loss in week 16 when they travel to face the Kansas City Chiefs.

Following the loss at home against the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas afternoon, the Kansas City Chiefs have lost four of their previous six games and enter this game with a record of 9-6, however, they are still in 1st place in the AFC West and have a two-game lead over the Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos for 1st place in the division and if they defeat the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday would record their 8th consecutive AFC West division championship.

Offensively, the Kansas City Chiefs have taken a step back this season and even though they remain an above-average offensive team, they aren’t as explosive and have only managed an average of 19.25 points per game over their last four games which has dropped their season average to 22.2 points per game which ranks 12th in the NFL. However, the defense for the Chiefs has been one of the most improved units this season in the NFL as they are allowing the 2nd fewest points per game in the league with an average of 17.67 points per game. The Kansas City Chiefs will look to bounce back following the loss to the Raiders when they host the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon.

BookMaker has the Kansas City Chiefs listed as 7-point favorites at home against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon in week 17 of the NFL season. Cincinnati has won seven of the previous ten and two of the previous three meetings while going 6-4 ATS in the last ten and 2-1 ATS in the last three games in the series. The Cincinnati Bengals are 6-7-2 ATS overall, 3-4 ATS on the road, and 2-2 ATS as an underdog this season while the Kansas City Chiefs are 7-7-1 ATS overall, 3-4 ATS at home, and 7-7-1 ATS as a favorite on the year.

Kansas City is the better team this season, however, Cincinnati has been the better team in the series, winning seven of the last ten and two of the last three meetings. The Bengals have also been the better team at covering the spread in the series, going 6-4 ATS in the last ten and 2-1 ATS in the last three contests.
