NFL Betting Preview: Cincinnati Bengals vs. Washington Commanders

August 26, 2023

The Cincinnati Bengals have been one of the best teams in the NFL ever since the drafting of their franchise quarterback, Joe Burrow, in the 2020 NFL Draft as they have compiled a record of 22-11 over the past two seasons with an appearance in the Super Bowl in the 2021 NFL season and an appearance for the 2nd consecutive season in the AFC Championship game last year. The Bengals currently have the 5th best odds of winning the Super Bowl as Vegas has Cincinnati listed as +995 odds to accomplish that task while also having an over/under win total of 11.5 games which is tied with the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers for the most entering the season.

Washington has a new owner after Dan Snyder has turned a once respected and accomplished franchise into one of the worst teams in the NFL. The Commanders have made the playoffs once since the 2017 NFL season and are not expected to be a playoff-caliber team this season as they have an over/under win total of 6.5 wins and are projected to finish in last place in the NFC East behind the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and New York Giants.

BookMaker has the Washington Commanders listed as 4.5-point favorites at home in week 3 of the NFL Preseason against the Cincinnati Bengals. Cincinnati is 3-1-1 in the last six games in the series while going 3-2 ATS in those matchups while both teams are 1-1-1 in the last three games with the Commanders going 2-1 ATS in those contests.

Cincinnati is looking for their first win in the preseason this year after losing to the Green Bay Packers in week 1 by a score of 19-36 and tying the Atlanta Falcons on the road by a score of 13-13 in week 2. The Bengals have looked pedestrian on offense this preseason as they are averaging 16 points per game while averaging 277 total yards, 209 passing yards, and 74.5 rushing yards per game. Jake Browning leads the team in passing completing 26 of 39 attempts for 235 yards with two interceptions while adding 55 rushing yards. Chris Evans leads the team in rushing with 14 carries for 64 yards. Andrei Iosivas leads the team in receiving with nine receptions for 94 yards.

The Washington Commanders have a chance to finish the preseason off undefeated after winning their first two games of the preseason including last week’s 29-28 win at home against the Baltimore Ravens which also handed the Ravens their first loss in the preseason over their previous 25 preseason games. Sam Howell led the team in passing completing 19 of 25 attempts for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Rodriguez Jr. led the team in rushing with five carries for 31 yards. Johan Dotson led the team in receiving, catching five of seven targets for 76 yards.

Cincinnati may have been the better team in the series over the last five games and is the more talented team entering the year, however, Washington has looked like a stronger team offensively this preseason averaging 23 points per game while Cincinnati is averaging 16 points per game. I look for the Washington Commanders to finish the preseason off undefeated which is why I am buying the .5 point and taking the Washington Commanders -4 at home against the Cincinnati Bengals on BookMaker for this matchup on Saturday evening.
