NFL Betting Preview: Cleveland Browns vs. Kansas City Chiefs

August 26, 2023

The Cleveland Browns were without a major aspect of their offense for the majority of the season last year with the suspension of DeShaun Watson which led to a record below .500 and missing the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive season. Even when Watson’s suspension was complete and he was back on the field they still struggled but did show glimpses of what the offense could look like once the rust wears off.

The Browns are a dark horse contender in the AFC this season, they may not be better than the Cincinnati Bengals, but Cleveland has a chance to make a playoff push and could feature a deadly offense if Watson plays at the level we are accustomed to seeing him play at this year.

What can be said about the Kansas City Chiefs that hasn’t already been said? The Chiefs have the best quarterback in the NFL and that’s not even a question, They have one of the best offensive lines, and feature a tight end, Travis Kelce, who has already established himself as a top 5 player at the position to ever play in the NFL.

Kansas City is coming off their 2nd Super Bowl in four seasons and is once again one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl based on Vegas odds of +684 which makes them the favorites to win the Super Bowl again this year. The AFC is loaded with talent with the Chiefs, Bills, and Bengals near the top and although it is hard to repeat as Super Bowl Champions, I would not bet against the Chiefs not being able to repeat this season.

BookMaker has the Cleveland Browns listed as 3.5-point favorites on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs in week 3 of the NFL Preseason. However, Kansas City has been the dominant team over the last ten games in the series, winning seven of the last ten including the previous five matchups in a row.

The Browns will be looking to end the preseason with a winning record after defeating the New York Jets in the Hall of Fame Game the Browns have lost at home against the Washington Commanders and tied the Philadelphia Eagles on the road last week by a score of 18-18. Dorian Thompson Robinson led the team in passing completing 13 of 25 attempts for 164 yards while adding 18 rushing yards. Demetric Felton led the team in rushing with seven carries for 36 yards. Austin Watkins Jr. led the team in receiving catching seven of 14 targets for 139 yards and a touchdown.

Kansas City has split their first two games of the preseason following a dominating win on the road against the Arizona Cardinals in week 2 by a score of 38-10. The Chiefs are averaging 31 points per game in the preseason while averaging 425 total yards, 337 passing yards, and 97 rushing yards. Shane Buechele leads the team in passing completing 21 of 28 targets for 260 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Lamical Perine leads the team in rushing with 12 carries for 65 yards. Rashee Rice leads the team in receiving with 11 receptions for 126 yards.

The Chiefs have flexed their muscles in the preseason and have been on a tear offensively, averaging 31 points per game with 425 total yards offensively in those matchups. Kansas City is more talented than the Browns and I look for their dominance in the series to continue with a win in this contest which is why I’m not even taking the points, instead I am taking the money line for the Kansas City Chiefs at +150 on BookMaker for this matchup in week 3 of the preseason.
