NFL Betting Preview: Dallas Cowboys vs. Las Vegas Raiders

August 26, 2023

The Las Vegas Raiders are likely to finish in last place in the AFC West this season as the Chiefs, Chargers, and Broncos are all more talented teams than the Raiders. Last year the Raiders finished with a record of 6-11 which led to a 3rd place finish in the AFC West behind the Chiefs and Chargers. Last season was the first losing season that Las Vegas has had since the 2019 NFL season. This year the Las Vegas Raiders enter the season with an over/under win total of 6.5 wins and based on Vegas odds are projected to finish in 4th place in the AFC West.

Dallas continues to have a good regular season but has failed to advance past the Divisional round in the NFC Playoffs in each of the previous two seasons. The Cowboys have finished with records of 12-5 in each of the previous two seasons, however, Dallas has lost in the Divisional round against the San Francisco 49ers losing by a score of 17-23 in the Wild Card round in 2021 and losing to the 49ers in the Divisional round last season by a score of 12-19. This year they enter the season with the 5th best odds to win the Super Bowl at +1280 and have an over/under win total of 10 wins.

BookMaker has the Las Vegas Raiders listed as 5.5-point favorites on the road against the Dallas Cowboys in week 3 of the NFL Preseason. The teams have split the last eight games of the series going 4-4 with Las Vegas going 4-3-1 ATS in those matchups while the Cowboys have won two of the last three but have gone 0-2-1 ATS in those contests.

The Las Vegas Raiders will be looking to finish the preseason off undefeated after defeating the San Francisco 49ers at home by a score of 34-7 in week 1 and the Los Angeles Rams on the road in week 2 by a score of 34-17. The Raiders are averaging 34 points per game in the NFL Preseason while averaging 353 total yards, 249 passing yards, and 109 rushing yards per game. Aidan O’Connell leads the team in passing completing 26 of 36 attempts for 304 yards and three touchdowns. Zamir White leads the team in rushing with 23 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown. Phillip Dorsett leads the team in receiving with six receptions for 95 yards.

The Cowboys will be looking for their first win of the preseason after losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars in week 1 of the preseason by a score of 23-28 and the Seattle Seahawks on the road in week 2 by a score of 14-22. Will Grier led the team in passing completing 13 of 18 attempts for 136 yards and an interception in the loss against Seattle. Rico Dowdle led the team in rushing with eight carries for 38 yards. Jalen Tolbert led the team in receiving, catching four of six targets for 66 yards in the loss.

Las Vegas has looked explosive offensively in the preseason averaging 34 points per game and even though Dallas has won two of the last three games in the series, the Raiders have been the better team at covering the spread going 4-3-1 ATS in the last eight and 2-0-1 ATS in the last three games of the series. I look for that trend to continue which is why I am buying the .5 point and taking the Las Vegas Raiders -5 on the road against the Dallas Cowboys on BookMaker.
