NFL Betting Preview: Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles Chargers

December 31, 2023

Two AFC West Division rivals will square off on Sunday afternoon in week 17 of the NFL season when the Los Angeles Chargers travel to Denver, Colorado to face the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High with kick-off scheduled for 4:25 PM ET and will air on CBS.

The Los Angeles Chargers have been one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL this season as they enter this game having been eliminated from playoff contention with a record of 5-10 and have been without Justin Herbert for the previous three games and will be without him for the remainder of the season. The Chargers have also lost six of their last seven and are on a three-game losing streak following a 22-24 loss at home against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. An offense that had been one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL the previous few seasons has looked pedestrian this season as the Chargers are averaging 21.67 points per game which ranks 18th in the NFL while a defense that entered the season with high expectations has been below average as well as they are allowing an average of 24.6 points per game which is the 7th most given up per game this season. The Los Angeles Chargers will look to end their three-game losing streak when they travel to face the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon.

Denver has announced that Russell Wilson has been benched as the starting quarterback for the Broncos and has been replaced by Jarrett Stidham for the remainder of the season following Sunday’s 23-26 loss at home against the New England Patriots which has extended the losing streak for the Broncos to two-games. Denver will need to win their remaining two games and hope that the Colts, Texans, Steelers, and Bengals all lose a game for them to make the playoffs this season. Denver has been a below-average offense this season as they are averaging 21.8 points per game while also allowing the 4th most points per game in the NFL with an average of 25.13 points per game. The Denver Broncos will look to end their two-game losing streak when they host the Los Angeles Chargers in week 17 of the NFL season.

BookMaker has the Denver Broncos listed as 3.5-point favorites at home against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday afternoon in week 17 of the NFL season. Denver has won six of the last ten and two of the last three meetings while going 6-4 ATS in the last ten and 2-1 ATS in the last three games in the series. The Los Angeles Chargers are 6-9 ATS overall, 3-4 ATS on the road, 1-5 ATS as an underdog, and 1-3 ATS in division games this season while the Denver Broncos are 5-9-1 ATS overall, 3-5 ATS at home, 2-5-1 ATS as a favorite, and 2-2 ATS in division games on the year.

Denver enters this game with a better record and has been the better team in the series, winning six of the last ten and two of the last three meetings. The Broncos have also been the better team at covering the spread in the series going 6-4 ATS in the last ten and 2-1 ATS in the last three matchups while the Chargers have struggled to cover the spread as an underdog with a record of 1-5 ATS as an underdog and are 1-3 ATS in division games which is why I am buying the .5 point and laying the points with the Denver Broncos when they host the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday afternoon.
