NFL Betting Preview: Detroit Lions vs. Los Angeles Rams

January 14, 2024

The Detroit Lions will host their first playoff game in over 30 years when they host the Los Angeles Rams in Detroit, Michigan at Ford Field on Sunday Night with the game kicking off at 8:00 PM ET and will air on NBC and the Peacock App.

The Los Angeles Rams are the 6 seed in the NFC Playoffs after finishing the regular season with a record of 10-7 while winning seven of their last eight games and are on a four-game winning streak following Sunday’s 21-20 win on the road against the San Francisco 49ers. The success of the Rams this season can be attributed to their offense as they are an above-average rushing and passing team ranking 11th in the NFL in rushing yards with an average of 120.29 rushing yards per game while ranking 10th in passing yards with an average of 239 passing yards per game.

Matthew Stafford had a nice bounce-back season this year and finished the regular season completing 326 of 521 attempts for 3,965 yards with 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while Puka Nacua was the main beneficiary of the passing offense and had one of the best rookie seasons for a wide receiver all-time as he had 105 receptions for 1,486 yards and six touchdowns. The Los Angeles Rams will look to extend their winning streak to five games when they travel to face the Detroit Lions.

The Detroit Lions won their first division title since the 1991 season and will host an NFL Playoff game for the first time in 33 seasons after finishing the season with a record of 12-5 which led to an NFC North Division championship and have won three of their last four games including a 30-20 win at home against the Minnesota Vikings in week 18. The Lions were one of the highest-scoring teams in the NFL while also having one of the best passing and rushing offenses as they enter this game averaging 5th most points per game with an average of 27.12 points per game while ranking 5th in rushing yards and 2nd in passing yards per game with an average of 135.94 rushing yards and 258.88 passing yards per game.

Jared Goff had a phenomenal season as he completed 407 of 605 attempts for 4,575 yards with 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while Amon-Ra St. Brown was the leading receiver with 119 receptions for 1,515 yards and ten touchdowns. Defensively, the Lions were below-average and had one of the worst secondaries in the NFL as they allowed an average of 23.24 points per game while allowing the 6th most passing yards per game with an average of 247.35 passing yards per game.

The Detroit Lions will look to build off the momentum following Sunday’s win against the Vikings when they host the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card round of the NFC Playoffs on Sunday night.

BookMaker has the Detroit Lions listed as 3-point favorites at home against the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card round of the NFC Playoffs on Sunday night. Los Angeles has won six of the last ten and two of the previous three meetings. The Rams are 6-4 ATS in the last ten while the Lions have covered the spread in two of the previous three games in the series. The Los Angeles Rams are 10-6-1 ATS overall, 5-3-1 ATS on the road, and 4-3-1 ATS as an underdog this season while the Detroit Lions are 12-5 ATS overall, 5-3 ATS at home, and 10-4 ATS as a favorite on the year.

Detroit enters this game with a better record, however, Los Angeles has been one of the hottest teams in the NFL as they have won seven of their last eight games and are on a four-game winning streak while having been the better team in the series, winning six of the last ten and going 6-4 ATS in those contests. As a result, I am taking the points with the Los Angeles Rams when they travel to face the Detroit Lions in the NFC Wild Card Round on Sunday night.
