NFL Betting Preview: Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Miami Dolphins

August 26, 2023

The Miami Dolphins are one of the top half teams in the AFC this season as they have talent on both sides of the ball including what may be one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, however, their season will depend upon the heath of Tua Tagovailoa who has had numerous injuries in his career including concussions. If Tagovailoa can stay healthy then the sky's the limit for the Dolphins, however, that is a big if. The Dolphins enter the season with an over/under win total of 9.5 wins and are projected to finish in 2nd place in the AFC East based on Vegas odds as BookMaker has the Dolphins listed as +300 to win the AFC East and has them listed as +2252 to win the Super Bowl which are the 9th best odds in the NFL.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were one of the most improved teams in the NFL last season going from a record of 3-14 and finishing in last place in the AFC South to a record of 9-8 and an AFC South Division title. The Jaguars defeated the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card round by a score of 31-30 before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs by a score of 20-27 in the Divisional round of the AFC Playoffs. This season Jacksonville enters the year as the favorite to win the AFC South as they are -170 to repeat as Division Champions and have an over/under win total of 9.5 wins with odds of +3154 at winning the Super Bowl.

BookMaker has the Jacksonville Jaguars listed as 6.5-point favorites at home against the Miami Dolphins in week 3 of the NFL Preseason. The teams have split the last ten games of the series with both going 5-5, however, Jacksonville has outscored Miami by an average of 19.8 to 18.4 points per game in those matchups while winning two of the last three games and going 2-1 ATS in those contests.

The Dolphins have split their first two games of the preseason losing at home against the Atlanta Falcons before bouncing back on the road against the Houston Texans in week 2 by a score of 28-3. Skylar Thompson led the team in passing completing 15 of 22 attempts for 157 yards with three touchdowns. Salvon Ahmed led the team in rushing with 12 carries for 99 yards. Braxton Berrios led the team in receiving, catching three of four targets for 33 yards and a touchdown.

Jacksonville will be looking to finish the preseason off undefeated after defeating the Dallas Cowboys in week 1 on the road by a score of 28-23 and defeating the Lions on the road in week 2 by a score of 25-7. The Jaguars are averaging 26.5 points per game in the preseason while averaging 406.5 total yards, 264 passing yards, and 145 rushing yards per game. Nathan Rourke leads the team in passing completing 19 of 29 attempts for 274 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 34 yards and a touchdown. Tank Bigsby leads the team in rushing with 22 carries for 122 yards. Elijah Cooks leads the team in receiving with four receptions for 111 yards.

Both teams are playoff-caliber teams this season and should be almost equal in terms of talent, however, given how dominant the Jaguars have looked offensively in the preseason as well as Jacksonville winning two of the last three games I am buying the .5 point and taking the Jacksonville Jaguars -6 on BookMaker for week 3 of the NFL Preseason.
