NFL Betting Preview: New England Patriots vs. Tennessee Titans

August 25, 2023

Neither the New England Patriots nor the Tennessee Titans are expected to be playoff contenders this season as the New England Patriots are expected to have the worst offense in the AFC East as the Bills, Dolphins, and Jets are all expected to be leaps and bounds better offensively. The Titans could sneak into the playoffs as they should be better than the Houston Texans and the Indianapolis Colts.

New England has split their first two games in the preseason after losing at home against the Houston Texans in week 1 by a score of 9-20 the Patriots defeated the Green Bay Packers in week 2 by a score of 21-17. New England is averaging 15 points per game while allowing an average of 18.5 points per game.

Bailey Zappe leads the team in passing completing 22 of 36 attempts for 196 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Harris leads the team in rushing with 18 carries for 41 yards. Kayshon Boutte leads the team in receiving with four receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown.

The Tennessee Titans based on Vegas odds are projected to be the 2nd best team in the AFC South only behind the Jacksonville Jaguars and have an over/under win total of 7.5 wins. Tennessee has looked decent but not great in the preseason with a record of 1-1 after losing on the road in week 1 to the Chicago Bears by a score of 17-23 and defeating the Minnesota Vikings on the road in week 2 by a score of 24-16.

The Titans are averaging 20.5 points per game in the preseason and are averaging 362 total yards, 179.5 passing yards, and 203.5 rushing yards per game. Malik Willis leads the team in passing completing 26 of 42 attempts for 274 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions while rushing for 113 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Julius Chestnut leads the team in rushing with 20 carries for 144 yards and a touchdown. Mason Kinsey leads the team in receiving with eight receptions for 77 yards.

BookMaker has the New England Patriots listed as 2-point favorites on the road against the Tennessee Titans in week 3 of the preseason and has set the total for the over/under plays at 37.5 points. New England has been the dominant team in the series winning eight of the last ten, however, the Titans have been the better team most recently in the series winning two of the last three games.

The Patriots are 7-3 ATS in the last ten games in the series. Malik Willis needs to have a spectacular game in the preseason finale as he is on the roster bubble. Willis is clearly behind Ryan Tannehill and Will Levis. I look for Malik Willis to play the majority of the game at quarterback for the Titans against the New England Patriots.

The Patriots have struggled against the pass, however, that is not the main threat of Malik Willis as he is more of a run-first quarterback and the Patriots have played the run well in the preseason allowing 104 rushing yards per game. As a result, I am taking the New England Patriots at -2 on BookMaker for this matchup on Friday evening.
