NFL Betting Preview: New England Patriots vs. Washington Commanders

November 5, 2023

The Washington Commanders will travel to Foxborough, Massachusetts to face the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium in week 9 of the NFL season with the game airing regionally on Fox and the game scheduled to kick off at 1:00 PM ET on Sunday afternoon.

Washington enters this game with a record of 3-5 following a 31-38 loss at home against the Philadelphia Eagles while the game ended in a push in week 8 of the NFL season. The Commanders scored 31 points while compiling a total of 472 yards offensively which included 397 passing yards and 84 rushing yards while allowing 38 points and 374 total yards defensively which included 319 passing yards and 59 rushing yards. Sam Howell led the team in passing, completing 39 of 52 attempts for 397 yards with four touchdowns and an interception while rushing for 11 yards on three attempts. Brian Robinson Jr. led the team in rushing with ten carries for 59 yards while adding two receptions for 20 yards. Johan Dotson led the team in receiving, catching eight of ten targets for 108 yards and a touchdown.

The New England Patriots enter this game with a record of 2-6 following a 17-31 loss on the road against the Miami Dolphins while failing to cover the 7.5-point spread as a road underdog in week 8 of the NFL season. New England scored 17 points while compiling a total of 218 yards offensively which included 161 passing yards and 77 rushing yards while allowing 31 points and 390 total yards defensively which included 324 passing yards and 78 rushing yards. Mac Jones led the team in passing, completing 19 of 29 attempts for 161 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Rhamondre Stevenson led the team in rushing with ten carries for 39 yards while adding two receptions for 11 yards. Kendrick Bourne led the team in receiving, catching three of four targets for 36 yards and a touchdown.

BookMaker has the New England Patriots listed as 3.5-point favorites at home against the Washington Commanders on Sunday afternoon in week 9 of the NFL season. New England has won four of the last six including the previous four games in a row while going 3-1-2 ATS in the last six and 2-0-1 ATS in the last three games in the series. The Washington Commanders are 3-4-1 ATS overall, 3-1 ATS on the road, and 3-1-1 ATS as an underdog this season while the New England Patriots are 2-6 ATS overall, 1-3 ATS at home, and 1-1 ATS as a favorite on the year.

The Washington Commanders had one of the best pass rush teams in the NFL, however, they traded away two of their cornerstone defensive lineman at the trade deadline by trading away Chase Young and Montez Sweat which will weaken their defense even more the rest of the season. This week the Commander will face a team they have struggled to beat when they travel to New England for a series in which they have lost the previous four games in a row and have gone 0-2-1 ATS in the previous three matchups. I look for those trends to continue which is why I am buying the .5 point and laying the points with the New England Patriots when they host the Commanders on Sunday afternoon.
