NFL Betting Preview: San Francisco 49ers vs. Washington Commanders

December 31, 2023

The San Francisco 49ers will travel to Landover, Maryland to face the Washington Commanders at FedEx Field in week 17 of the NFL season with the game scheduled to start at 1:00 PM ET on Sunday afternoon and will air on Fox.

Despite losing the game against the Baltimore Ravens by a score of 19-33 on Monday night, the San Francisco 49ers are tied with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions for the best record in the NFC at 11-4, however, the loss ended six-game winning streak and Brock Purdy had his worst game of the season as he completed 18 of 32 attempts for 255 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions.

However, San Francisco remains one of the highest-scoring teams in the league as they enter this game averaging 29.6 points per game which ranks 3rd in the NFL, and have one of the best scoring defenses in the NFL as they are allowing the 3rd fewest points per game in the league with an average of 17.8 points per game. Christian McCaffrey has also had an MVP-caliber season as he leads the team in rushing with 1,395 yards and 14 touchdowns while adding 66 receptions for 537 yards and seven touchdowns. The San Francisco 49ers will look to bounce back following the loss on Monday night against the Ravens when they travel to face the Washington Commanders.

The Washington Commanders have one of the worst records in the NFC this season at 4-11 and are in last place in the NFC East while having lost their previous six games including Sunday’s 28-30 loss on the road against the New York Jets. The defense for the Commanders has struggled since Washington traded away two of their best pass rushers as they are allowing an average of 32.14 points per game since the trades while also dropping their average to 30.2 points allowed per game which is the most allowed in the league. The offense has also been below-average as they are averaging 20.6 points per game which ranks 23rd in the NFL, however, they have been a slightly above-average passing offense as they enter this game averaging 228.73 passing yards per game. Sam Howell leads the team in passing having completed 352 of 557 attempts for 3,624 yards with 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions while rushing for 265 yards and five touchdowns. The Washington Commanders will look to end their six-game losing streak when they host the San Francisco 49ers in week 17 of the NFL season.

BookMaker has the San Francisco 49ers listed as 13.5-point favorites on the road against the Washington Commanders on Sunday afternoon in week 17 of the NFL season. San Francisco has won six of the last ten and two of the last three meetings. The Commanders are 5-4-1 ATS in the last ten and 2-1 ATS in the last three games in the series. The San Francisco 49ers are 8-7 ATS overall, 5-3 ATS on the road, and 8-7 ATS as a favorite this season while the Washington Commanders are 6-8-1 ATS overall, 0-5-1 ATS at home and 6-4-1 ATS as an underdog on the year.

San Francisco is the more talented team this season and has been the better team in the series, winning six of the last ten and two of the last three meetings. The Commanders have been one of the worst teams at covering the spread at home as they have yet to cover the spread at home with a record of 0-5-1 ATS at home which is why I am buying the .5 point and laying the points with the San Francisco 49ers when they travel to face the Washington Commanders on Sunday afternoon in week 17 of the NFL season.
