NHL Betting Picks and Predictions: Detroit Red Wings vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
October 18, 2023
The Pittsburgh Penguins (2-1-0) and Detroit Red Wings (2-1-0) will battle it out in Michigan soon for an appealing betting opportunity. The Penguins are expected to succeed at -130 despite being on the road.
Date: October 18, 2023 at 7:30 PM ET
Location: Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan
Coverage: TNT
Pittsburgh Penguins Betting Preview
The Penguins just secured their second win of the season, which was a 5-2 showing against the Calgary Flames. Impressively, all five of those goals were scored in the third period.
They are now leading in the Metropolitan Division, but will they hold onto that spot for long? They finished fifth in the division last season with a 40-31-11 record and just outside of the playoffs.
They have had a solid start to their season, as they are averaging 3.67 goals per game and their opponents are averaging 2.00. This is a good separation between scoring averages, but they must continue to wedge the gap.
As far as taking shot attempts, they are not shy at 35.0 a game. But their opponents are not far behind at 30.5. If they can become more accurate and slow down their opponents, it should bode well for their chances of winning.
Detroit Red Wings Betting Preview
The Red Wings had an appealing offensive outburst when they beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-4 in their last game. The Red Wings consistently added two goals per period, making it difficult for the Lightning to catch up.
They are holding onto the second place spot in the Atlantic Division, but one tiny misstep and they will tumble a bit. Each game is still crucial in a tightly packed division, but the Red Wings seem poised to improve on their 35-37-10 record (seventh in division) from last season.
They have not had issues scoring, but their defense has been worrisome. They are averaging 4.50 goals per game and give up 4.00. This margin will need to change, especially against a good scoring game.
The Red Wings aggressively get up 38.5 shot attempts, which shows they are somewhat accurate with moderate scoring. On top of that, they have limited their opponents to 26.0 shots a game. If they can keep their foes to around that average, they should have quality chances to win games.
Odds, Series Trends and Free Pick
MyBookie odds reveal that the Pittsburgh Penguins are slight favorites to win this game. Based on recent success, it makes sense to select them to win.
Detroit Red Wings: +110
Pittsburgh Penguins: -130
Both teams should provide an appealing offensive game. The Penguins are slightly more appealing on paper to win this game, assuming they can slow down the Red Wings.
Spooky Express Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins -130
