NHL Betting Picks and Predictions: Edmonton Oilers vs. New York Islanders

December 19, 2023

The Edmonton Oilers (13-14-1) will battle the New York Islanders (14-8-8) for the second time this season for the ESPN+ Hockey Night event at the UBS Arena in New York at 7:30 PM ET. The Oilers are favored to repeat with a moneyline at -140.

Edmonton Oilers Betting Preview

The Oilers have lost their last two games, both of which were at home, and are aiming for consistency as they take a game on the road now. Their previous defeat was a 5-1 showing against the Florida Panthers.

Connor McDavid has been superb on offense, leading with 41 points and 30 assists. Zach Hyman has 18 goals, which also ranks fourth in the league.

The Oilers have averaged 3.43 goals and taken 34.4 shots per game. Their power play performances have been solid with 27 goals scored and 21 allowed. Their power play percentage stands at an impressive 28.4.

Defensively, they could use some help as they allow 3.46 goals and 28.5 shots per game. Their penalty kill percentage is also a bit higher than the Islanders’ at 79.4.

New York Islanders Betting Preview

The Islanders have also lost their last two games and are now 3-2 in their last five. Their previous defeat was a 5-3 showing against the Montreal Canadiens, which was also their second consecutive game in allowing five goals to their opponents.

Brock Nelson leads them with 15 goals, ranking 13th in the league. They also have support in other areas, with Mathew Barzal leading with 32 points and Noah Dobson leading with 27 assists.

If the Islanders can average more than their current 3.10 goals and 30.4 shots per game, they should be in good shape. While they have scored 21 power play goals and have allowed 26, they still have a power play percentage at 25.3.

They are allowing 3.23 goals and 35.7 shots per game from opponents, which is slightly more than they score themselves. Their penalty kill percentage is a bit lacking at 70.8, which could make an impact here.

Odds, Series Trends and Free Pick

The odds provided by MyBookie show that the Edmonton Oilers are slight favorites for success. Looking at both teams stats, this could be a toss up for how well they have been playing.

  • New York Islanders: +120

  • Edmonton Oilers: -140

The previous matchup between these two had the Oilers winning at home 4-1 back in November. This could very well end up like that again or potentially go to overtime.

Since both teams are a bit volatile when it comes to scoring and defending, anything can happen. Look for the Oilers to win another over the Islanders, but likely with a close game.
