NHL Betting Picks and Predictions: Ottawa Senators vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

December 27, 2023

The Ottawa Senators will travel to Toronto, Ontario to face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday evening at the Scotiabank Arena with the puck scheduled to drop at 7:00 PM ET.

The Senators have lost six of their last seven games, however, they are coming off a 5-4 win in overtime at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday which also ended their six-game losing streak and improved their record to 12-17 on the season which puts them in last place in the Atlantic Division.

Ottawa has been an above-average scoring team this season as they are averaging 3.41 goals per game, however, they are one of the worst teams defensively in the NHL as they are allowing an average of 3.55 goals per game. Joonas Korpisalo has been one of the worst starting goalies this season in the NHL with a record of 6-11 and is allowing an average of 3.62 goals per game with a save percentage of .891. The Ottawa Senators will look to build off the momentum following the overtime win at home against the Penguins when they travel to face the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been one of the best teams in the NHL this season as they enter this game in 2nd place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 17-8-6 and 40 points. The success of the Maple Leafs this season can be attributed to their prolific offensive unit as they are averaging the most goals per game in the league with an average of 3.58 goals per game. Auton Matthews continues to be one of the best players in the NHL and enters this game leading the team in goals with 28 which also leads the league this season.

Defensively, the Maple Leafs have not been as successful as they have been a below-average defensive unit that is allowing an average of 3.35 goals per game while also having a below-average penalty kill percentage of 79.2%. Ilya Samsonov has had a dreadful season as he enters this matchup with a record of 5-2-5 while allowing an average of 3.79 goals per game with a .871 save percentage. The Toronto Maple Leafs ended their two-game losing streak on Saturday with a 4-1 win on the road against the Columbus Blue Jackets and will look to build off the momentum following that win when they host the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday evening.

BookMaker has the Toronto Maple Leafs listed as -170 moneyline favorites at home against the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday evening. Toronto has won seven of the last ten and two of the last three meetings while winning by an average margin of .7 goals per game over the last ten and .33 goals per game over the last three games in the series.

Both teams are two of the highest-scoring teams in the league while also being one of the worst teams defensively as Ottawa is allowing an average of 3.55 goals per game while Toronto is allowing an average of 3.35 goals per game. Both starting goalies have also struggled this season as Joonas Korpisalo is allowing an average of 3.62 goals per game while Ilya Samsonov is allowing an average of 3.79 goals per game. I look for this matchup to be one of the highest-scoring games on Wednesday’s slate which is why I am taking the over 7 goals when the Ottawa Senators travel to face the Toronto Maple Leafs.
