SEC Conference Tournament Finals: Auburn Tigers vs. Florida Gators

March 17, 2024

The 6-seed Florida Gators will face the 4-seed Auburn Tigers for the SEC Conference Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon for the automatic qualifying bid for the SEC Conference with the game scheduled to start at 1:00 PM ET in Nashville, Tennessee at the Bridgestone Arena and will air on ESPN.

Florida Gators Team Preview

The Florida Gators looked as though they might lose in their SEC Semifinals matchup against the Texas A&M Aggies after getting off to a sluggish start to the game and trailing the Aggies 42-50 at halftime, however, the Gators after halftime started to get hot from beyond the arc as they made three threes in the first six minutes of the 2nd half to take a 59-58 lead and led for the majority of the 2nd half after taking the lead.

Florida was already projected to be in the NCAA Tournament and will look to improve their seeding on Sunday when they face the Auburn Tigers for the SEC Conference Tournament championship and win their first tournament since the 2013-14 college basketball season. The Gators defeated the Tigers in their only other matchup this season in dominating fashion at home by a score of 81-65 and covered the spread as a 1-point home underdog.

The Gators have had success throughout the SEC Tournament because of their offensive efficiency as they have averaged 94 points per game in their three matchups in the tournament. Florida will look to win the SEC Tournament and win their 4 consecutive game when they face the Auburn Tigers.

Auburn Tigers Team Preview

The Auburn Tigers were one of the best teams in the SEC this season, so the Tigers making it to the SEC Tournament Championship game should not surprise anyone as they entered the tournament projected to be at worst a 5th seed in the NCAA Tournament, however, if the Tigers win the SEC Tournament on Sunday afternoon then they are likely looking at a 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The success of the Tigers this season can be attributed to their offensive efficiency as they rank 13th nationally in scoring with an average of 83.48 points per game. Auburn struggled in the 1st half of their SEC Semifinals matchup against Mississippi State and trailed the Bulldogs for the majority of the first half as they trailed 9-2 to start the game and trailed by as many as seven points in the game before tying Mississippi State 31-31 at the half and in the 2nd half the Tigers started the half on a 5-0 run and never trailed following their hot start to the 2nd half.

Auburn’s last SEC Tournament Championship came in the 2018-19 college basketball season and the Tigers will be looking to win their 2nd SEC Tournament championship under Bruce Pearl when they face the Florida Gators on Sunday afternoon.

Odds and Series Trends

WagerWeb has the Auburn Tigers listed as 5.5-point favorites against the Florida Gators in the SEC Tournament Championship game on Sunday afternoon. Over the last five seasons, the Florida Gators have defeated the Auburn Tigers in four of their six meetings including a blowout win this season at home by a score of 81-65 while covering the spread as a 1-point home underdog.

Game Pick

Auburn has been one of the best teams in the SEC while Florida has been shooting the ball extremely well in the SEC Tournament and is averaging 94 points per game in the tournament. Florida defeated Auburn in their only other matchup this season by 16 points and as well as they have played in the SEC tournament it is hard to pass up getting the points which is why I am buying the .5 point and taking the points with the Florida Gators when they face the Auburn Tigers for the SEC Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon.
