Serie A Betting Preview: Inter Milan vs. Napoli

December 3, 2023

Looking to turn around their season, Scudetto holders Napoli welcome Inter Milan at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Sunday night.

Inter Milan are bidding for their first win at Napoli since January 2020, failing to beat the Partenopei in their last four visits (1-3-0).

The Partenopei resume their Serie A campaign following a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Thus, Walter Mazzarri's men will need to defend the second spot in Group C when they welcome Braga later this month and they need to avoid a defeat.

Napoli have been really poor at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona this season - winning just two of their six Serie A matches, losing three.

Their poor form required actions and Walter Mazzarri returned to Naples last month as the experienced Italian head coach already led the Partenopei between October 2009 and May 2013.

Shortly after he left Napoli in May 2013, Mazzarri joined Inter Milan but he did not achieve something remarkable and was dismissed after a series of disappointing results in November 2014.

Mazzarri returned for a second spell at Napoli as he replaced Rudi Garcia, who was sacked only a few months after his appointment as the Frenchman failed to build on Luciano Spalletti's legacy. Garcia was dismissed after Napoli's disappointing 1-0 home loss to Empoli prior to last month's international break.

Walter Mazzarri made his re-debut when Napoli claimed a 2-1 win at fellow top-four hopefuls Atalanta last weekend and the 62-year-old Italian head coach will be keen to achieve another good result on his first match at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Having won just one of their last four matches in all competitions (1-1-2), Napoli are set for an eventful period in the next 10 days, when they'll  take on the two Serie A leaders Inter Milan and Juventus, and the Partenopei will also play a crucial Champions League game with Braga.

Mathias Oliveira was forced off in the first half against Atalanta and the Uruguay international joined fellow left-back left-Mario Rui on the sidelines. Mazzarri hopes to have Rui, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury, available for selection later this month, whereas Oliveira will return after New Year.

With Mathias Oliveira and Marui Rui both sidelined for Napoli, Juan Jesus could be handed another start at left-back on Sunday night.

In a huge boost for Napoli's attack, Victor Osimhen recovered from a hamstring muscle injury and the Nigerian forward was introduced as a half-time substitute against Real Madrid. Now, Osimhen will be eager to make his first start since the 3-1 home defeat to Fiorentina on 8 October.

Elsewhere, Jesper Lindstrom is expected to make his return to action for the big weekend clash against Inter Milan. The 23-year-old Denmark international missed the trip to Bergamo due to a shin injury and he was also forced to skip the midweek journey to Spain.

Even though Inter Milan already secured one of the top two spots in Group D of the Champions League, last season's finalists refused to surrender as they found themselves three goals behind just 34 minutes into their visit to Portuguese champions Benfica on Wednesday night.

Joao Mario - the ex-Inter Milan man - scored a hat-trick against his former club to give Benfica a 3-0 lead, but Simone Inzaghi's men fought back to eventually earn a 3-3 draw with second half goals from Marko Arnautovic, Davide Frattesi and Alexis Sanchez. Thus, the Nerazzurri remain level on 11 points with Real Sociedad and the top spot in their Champions League group will be determined in the final round.

Domestically, Inter Milan are now second in Serie A, one point behind leaders Juventus after the Bianconeri's dramatic 2-1 win at Monza on Friday night. Of course, Simone Inzaghi's side can regain the top spot with a favorable outcome in Naples and they won't settle for anything less.

The Nerazzurri travel to Naples for their third consecutive away game after the international break. In addition to the aforementioned 3-3 draw at Benfica, Inter Milan were held to a 1-1 draw against bitter rivals Juventus in the Derby d'Italia last weekend.

Simone Inzaghi still cannot count on injured defenders Alessandro Bastoni and Benjamin Pavard but he had the opportunity to rotate his squad for the Champions League clash with Benfica. Keenly aware of the importance of his side's clash with Napoli at the weekend, the Inter Milan boss made wholesale changes and should recall all of his aces here.

Lautaro Martinez continued his prolific form for Inter Milan as the Argentine forward scored his 13th Serie A goal in as many appearances during the 1-1 draw at Juventus last Sunday.

Possible Starting Lineups of Napoli and Inter Milan

  • Napoli: Alex Meret - Juan Jesus, Amir Rrahmani, Natan, Giovanni Di Lorenzo - Piotr Zielinski, Stanislav Lobotka, Frank Anguissa - Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Victor Osimhen, Matteo Politano. (4-3-3)

  • Inter Milan: Yann Sommer - Francesco Acerbi, Stefan de Vrij, Matteo Darmian - Federico Dimarco, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Hakan Çalhano?lu, Nicolo Barella, Denzel Dumfries - Marcus Thuram, Lautaro Martinez. (3-5-2)

Inter Milan have lost only one game this season - a shock 2-1 home defeat to Sassuolo in September - and are yet to lose an away game across all competitions (6-3-0).

Yet, Napoli have seemingly found a new lease of life after the dismissal of Rudi Garcia and the second appointment of Walter Mazzarri. The reigning champions are eight points behind their opponents and nine off current leaders Juventus, so a victory against Inter Milan could somehow boost their hopes for anything better than a top-four finish.

The Partenopei are aiming to claim their first home win since the 4-1 victory over Udinese on 27 September, having lost three of their last five matches at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona across all competitions (0-2-3).
