UEFA Champions League Betting Preview: Atletico Madrid vs. Feyenoord

November 28, 2023

Group E action in the Champions League resumes on Tuesday when Feyenoord take on Atletico Madrid at De Kuip.

Atletico Madrid and Feyenoord played out a thrilling first leg at the Metropolitano in Madrid, where Diego Simeone's side claimed a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Eredivisie champions.

Feyenoord started strongly as they took the lead twice in the first half and when it looked like they might go into the break with a 2-1 lead, Antoine Griezmann leveled the score just before the half-time whistle. Alvaro Morata scored his second goal of the game early in the second half to complete his side's comeback.

The Dutch champions returned to action with a short trip to city rivals Excelsior in the Eredivisie on Saturday, which was a warm-up for their crunch Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.

Arne Slot's side would be out of the Champions League should they lose and Lazio beat Celtic in Rome. They will know what they need to do by kick-off as the matchup between Lazio and Celtic is one of the early kick-offs on Tuesday.

All in all, Feyenoord are unbeaten at De Kuip since a surprise 0-0 draw with Fortuna Sittard on the opening weekend of the Eredivisie campaign in August.

The reigning champions are second in the Eredivisie at the moment, seven points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven, who are yet to drop a point after 13 games. However, the two Dutch giants are set to face off at De Kuip on Sunday, which wraps up a big week for both sides.

Arne Slot's side have won seven consecutive home matches in all competitions, including their Champions League games with Celtic and Lazio.

As a result, Feyenoord sit third in Group E but are just two points behind group leaders Atletico Madrid. Should they manage to win the match on Tuesday, Feyenoord will be in a strong position to reach the last-16.

Santiago Gimenez fired Feyenoord to a 4-2 victory over Rotterdam rivals Excelsior at the weekend, with the Mexican forward bagging a hat-trick shortly after he returned from an exhausting journey to Central and North Americas as he was involved in Mexico's CONCACAF Nations League matches against Honduras.

It was the first time Gimenez scored since he netted a brace for Feyenoord's 3-1 home win over Lazio last month and the Mexican will be eager to add to his tally.

Gimenez now boasts 16 goals in just 13 Eredivisie games this term and he also scored two goals in as many European appearances, having been suspended in Feyenoord's opening two Champions League matches.

Slot has nearly a clean bill of health ahead of Tuesday night, meaning he has some tough decisions to make in midfield and attack.

Dutch right-back Bart Nieuwkoop, who returned to his boyhood club this summer, and Iranian winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh are both set to miss the tie through injuries but experienced Austrian defender Gernot Trauner should come into the starting XI.

Yankuba Minteh recovered from a hamstring injury as The Gambia teenager was brought on as a second-half substitute and assisted for Feyenoord's second goal.

Elsewhere, Memphis Depay made a long-awaited return from a muscle injury as he had a cameo against Mallorca at the weekend. However, the Netherlands attacker may only have to settle for a place on the bench against Feyenoord.

Atletico Madrid Betting Preview (+165 at MyBookie)

Atletico Madrid resumed their La Liga campaign as Antoine Griezmann's second-half header gave them a 1-0 win over Mallorca on Saturday night. Thus, they remain third in La Liga, four points behind the two leaders (Real Madrid and Girona), yet with a game in hand.

Diego Simeone's side have extended their perfect home form this season (winning all of their nine home matches so far in 2023-24), but their away form hasn't been that great. Indeed, Los Colchoneros have won just two of their last six away games in all competitions and are now bidding to at least avoid a defeat at De Kuip.

Unbeaten in the Champions League this term, Atletico Madrid are top of Group E but things can suddenly change should they lose at Feyenoord on Tuesday night.

Atletico Madrid travel to the Netherlands on the back of a 6-0 home win over Celtic last time out. However, Los Rojiblancos failed to win either of their two Champions League away games this season as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Lazio on the opening day (when Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel scored a stoppage-time equalizer) as well as to a 2-2 draw at Celtic last month.

Alvaro Morata's brace inspired Atletico Madrid's comeback win in the first meeting against Feyenoord and the Spain international should lead the line in Rotterdam.

Meanwhile, Diego Simeone has recently signed a three-year contract extension that will see him stay at the Spanish club until 2027.

Having been appointed as Atletico Madrid head coach back in December 2011, the 53-year-old is currently in the midst of his 12th year in charge at the Rojiblancos.

The Argentine tactician has guided the club to a few major honors since then, including two La Liga titles (2014 and 2021) as well as two Europa League triumphs. However, he is yet to win the Champions League even though his side had reached the finals in 2014 and 2016 (losing both against arch rivals Real Madrid).

Thomas Lemar remains a long-term absentee for the Spanish club, but Rodrigo De Paul is set to return as the Argentina midfielder served a suspension in the Champions League after he was sent-off in the 2-2 draw at Celtic last month.

Possible Starting Lineups of Feyenoord and Atletico Madrid

  • Feyenoord: Justin Bijlow - Lutsharel Geertruida, Gernot Trauner, David Hancko, Quilindschy Hartman - Mats Wieffer, Quinten Timber - Luka Ivanusec, Calvin Stengs, Igor Paixao - Santiago Gimenez. (4-2-3-1)

  • Atletico Madrid: Jan Oblak - Axel Witsel, Jose Gimenez, Mario Hermoso - Nahuel Molina, Rodrigo De Paul, Koke, Saul Niguez, Samuel Lino - Antoine Griezmann, Alvaro Morata. (3-5-2)

Spooky Express Betting Prediction

The Dutch giants are well aware that they need to beat Atletico Madrid in their final home match in the Champions League groups to stand a chance of going through to the knockouts.

This is a huge match for Arne Slot's side and a key to victory will be whether they can keep Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann from controlling the game. The experienced Frenchman has been in brilliant form this season and is full of confidence right now, having scored 13 goals in 17 appearances across all competitions.

The Spanish side head to the Netherlands as they are aiming to extend unbeaten form before they welcome Lazio in the final group stage game next month.
