Spooky Express Annual College Football Bowl Game Picks

Each year, since the early 2000's, Spooky Express has posted Spooky's personal plays according to a system that he came up with back in 1977.  That system has been reliable over the years but with the new trend in players leaving for the NFL, and entering the transfer portal, it sort of makes the process a bit more confusing. 

 

Therefore, this year, instead posting all of the numbers and all of the factors that play into the pick, we decided to give you the reason, the play and how strong of a play it will be.  

 

These plays will come in randomly as Spooky obtains information so be sure you check this post out frequently, over the next several weeks during the bowl season!

Saturday, December 16th

Myrtle Beach Bowl - 11am ET on ESPN

Georgia Southern vs. Ohio

Brooks Stadium - Conway, South Carolina

Ohio has lost a ton of players heading to the transfer portal and if teams were playing at 100% and there was no transfer portal, things may be different but the way they are, we have to sort of side with Georgia Southern. This is a very small play, half unit. Nothing crazy, this is day one of the bowl season!

 

Note: We initially had this as Georgia Southern minus the points but Spooky sent over a email late last night and told us to take the moneyline..... so moneyline it is! Go Georgia Southern PK -140.

Results (Loss 0-1 | -0.70 Units): Ohio came out and crushed Georgia Southern 41-21, giving us our first loss of the bowl season.  We didn't really care much for this so we only went a half unit. We will get it back in the next game.

Louisiana vs. Jacksonville State

Jacksonville State would love nothing more than to end their first season in the FBS with a 9 win season and a bowl win!  Jacksonville State has an awesome run defense. 

 

Overall, they held half of their opponents to under 21 points and now face a Louisiana team that is on their 3rd QB of season. Louisiana has played a very strong schedule, with 12 of 14 opponents being bowl eligible.

 

There is no secret here what Jacksonville St will do. They run the 4th most in the country and they play at the 131st time of possession.  The Gamecocks are going to come in motivated and get the win here! We like this one a lot! Give us Jacksonville St here for 4 units!

Result (Winner 1-1 | +3.30 Units) - This one went to overtime but Jacksonville St got the W 34-31. We played this and gave it out on the moneyline, so its a winner for us!

Appalachian State vs. Miami (Ohio)

Both teams will lean on their defense in this game along with Miami Oh having a new quarterback.  But the logic behind this game is also the weather. Nothing crazy here, just a half unit play on a game we really aren't excited about. The line should move downwards so grab it when you can.

The Aggies are just the better team and have the better coach whereas Fresno State will be without their head coach.  This line is much closer than we expect this one. Give us New Mexico State.

Boise Defense built to stop the pass and UCLA Defense is built to stop the run.  That will work in Boise State's favor since UCLA is unable to run the ball. California comes into this game healthy and without any transfer issues while Texas Tech cannot say the same. California has improved as the season went along and they should easily be able to keep up with Tech and outlast them at the finish. For now, it is a play but very small.

Very disappointing season for Western Kentucky along with missing a few players towards the portal but on the other side Old Dominion is not much of a fast strike and imposing team.  Truly no opinion on this game as we get started with Bowl season but if forced will take the points with the Hilltoppers.

Tuesday, December 19th

Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl - 9pm ET on ESPN

Marshall vs. UTSA

Marshall fired their OC at the end of the season, finished at the bottom in points per dive and lost 6 of their last 8 games. UTSA will have the home field advantage and although they lost one of their defensive stars to the portal this should be a relatively low scoring game.

Result: (Loser 3-4 | -1.83) This one went according to plan, wth UTSA winning 35-17 to keep the game under the posted number, and get us another win. The one powerful Marshall offense was truly non-existent and helped keep it under the number. 

 

 


Thursday, December 21st

South Florida vs. Syracuse

USF has big play ability and have scored over 35 points in half their games this season.  Syracuse has a good defense but that is based on weaker opponents and when playing bowl type teams have given up quite a bit.  Back and forth scoring should send it over.

Friday, December 22nd

UCF vs. Duke

Georgia Tech will be without 2 of their defensive standouts and their defense surrendered a ton of points in four of their final six games. They also finished at the bottom of points per drive allowed while Central Florida finished in the top 30 in the nation in points per drive.

Result: (Loser 3-6 | -4.03) Well.... it started off as planned, with UCF jumping out to a 14 point lead in the 1st quarter but it was all downhill from there. GT made some adjustments last in the 1st quarter and completely stopped UCF from that point on. We took a loser on that day but it was just 1 unit and our best is yet to come! 

 


Saturday, December 23rd

Should see a lot of scoring in this game as both offenses have been clicking recently and taking the points seems like the thing to do.

Troy will be without their head coach but their defense will be what will win this game as Duke has quite a few changes happening. It is also a great opportunity for Troy to gain a victory against a Power Five team.

Result: (Loser 4-7 | -4.13) This was a tough loss for us, as Troy lost the game outright, 17-10!  Troy had no offense at all in this game, going scoreless in the first half and only scoring a field goal and a touchdown in the 2nd half. We took the loss here but it was only 1 unit.  

 

Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl - 3:30pm ET on ABC - James Madison vs. Air Force

Two good defenses match up and although Air Force lost their last 4 games, they have been here before and will present a unique challenge to James Madison. Slight lean to the Air Force plus the points as Madison loses their coach and QB.

Utah State has the travel advantage in this game.  Georgia State has lost their last 5 games and their top RB has hit the transfer portal as has the backup RB.  Utah State will win this game.0 PM - SPD has one subject detained. This game may be a rocking chair affair after EMU lost their QB to the portal and the Jaguars not only won 10 games, they were very talented and have already defeated a Power Five team earlier in the season.

Utah is dealing with quite a few changes to their team and although Northwestern is not a team that will keep you up at night they should keep this game close in a low scoring game.

Result: (Winner 7-8 | -2.23) We cashed an upset winner here on NW, as they beat up on PAC-12 Utah 14-7.  It was a low scoring game, as we expected and in the end, the Wildcats got the outright win. 

 



Easypost Hawai’i Bowl - 10:30pm ET on ESPN - San Jose State vs. Coastal Carolina

SJ State QB will end his career at home in Hawaii where he started his career.  They have not lost in over 2 months after playing a tough early schedule. Coastal Carolina has lost a few players and will not be able to keep up.

Result: (Loser 7-9 | -6.63) We were big on this play, with San Jose State being nearly a double digit favorite and they ended up losing the game straight up by the score 24-14.  Tough loss for us but we will get it back. 

 


Tuesday, December 26th

Bowling Green vs. Minnesota

Minnesota has more talent and are offensively balanced but they lost their last 4 games, their QB may not play and Bowling Green is not a good defensive team.  But, Bowling Green wants to be here and will match up well and keep this game close.

Result: (Loser 7-10 | -7.73) We took the L in this one but it was a close game. Minnesota won the game by 6 points, 30-24, and BG made a run at it in the end, but came up short. The points didn't help us and we get the loss.

This game should be one of the tightest matchups in the bowl season.  At this point Texas State has the ability to score but Rica has a solid passing game as well and absolutely makes sense to grab the points with the Owls.

Virginia Tech has been scoring points in bunches and Tulane after losing the Conference Championship now loses their head coach.  Va Tech can eliminate turnovers they should win this game rather easily.

Not a game that I am excited about as a Trojans fan but unless I am missing something, USC is losing their QB, WR and RB in this game and Louisville will take advantage of a USC team that has struggled mightily to close the year.

A&M is on their 3rd starting QB and have not covered in their last 6 matchups against the Cowboys.  Oke State also has one of the leading rushers in the nation and are a good 4th quarter team.

This could be one of the best bets of Bowl Season as SMU can score and the Eagles cannot defend so that does not bode well.  SMU also has a solid defense so this game could get ugly.

Scarlet Knights are in good shape coming into this game while Miami has lost almost a dozen players entering the transfer portal or draft.

NC State has a stout defense and one of the best in the league with a veteran team. K State has a new Offensive Coordinator, lost a few players in the transfer portal and one of them being their star cornerback along with a new starting QB.  NC State keeps this close.

No. 12 Oklahoma vs. No. 14 Arizona

Arizona is playing for 10 wins this season! They are 9-3 overall and went 7-2 in the PAC-12.  They are playing very well at this time and Oklahoma may not have as much motivation.  They are ranked 12th in the college football playoff picture and they will be playing in their 25th consecutive bowl game. Not really sure they will get up for the Alamo Bowl?

Honestly there is no way to select this game at this point in time as Notre Dame's QB and top 3 WR are not playing and the Beavers QB is in the portal and they lost their head coach. Lean towards Notre Dame but TBD.

Memphis can definitely score although they certainly cannot defend.  Iowa State on the other hand plays tough Big 12 football and will certainly not make it easy.  No real opinion until we get closer but lean to Memphis taking the points.

No. 7 Ohio State vs. No. 9 Missouri

AT&T Stadium - Arlington, Texas

Missouri has had a great season and have beaten some good teams only losing to LSU and Georgia.  OSU will most definitely be missing a few of their stars in this game going to the Draft or portal.  Lots more motivation for the Tigers but the line has moved and too much value with the Buckeyes.

No. 10 Penn State vs. No. 11 Ole Miss

Penn State's defense leads the country and will control the line of scrimmage. They will control the ball and limit turnovers and be able to pressure Jaxson Dart the Ole Miss QB.  Should be a low-scoring game that the Nittany Lions win.

This should be another good game as you are dealing with a proficient offense with the Terrapins and a solid defense in the Tigers. I would lean towards Maryland plus the points.

This could have been one of the most exciting matchups of bowl season if not for the injury to QB Jordan Travis of FSU.  Georgia is a huge favorite without Travis and their star WR Johnny Wilson from Florida State.  But defense wins championships and I could actually see a relatively low scoring close game here so take the points at this time.

Toledo vs. Wyoming

Not a game that I am overly excited about with Toledo losing their starting QB in the portal that will make a difference in the game. Wyoming has a solid rush defense and they finished the season on a high note.  Slight lean to Wyoming.

Unfortunately, another game that is going to be anticlimactic with Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels probably not playing.  Wisconsin can run the ball but I do not see them being able to withstand LSU at the end.  Slight lean to LSU right now until we know more.

Iowa's defense against the world.  Tennessee has been solid defensively all year and I just cannot see how Iowa can keep up if the Vols can put up a few big play scores.  Slight lean to Tennessee.

Surprisingly Bo Nix will play for Oregon and there is no chance Liberty will be able to keep this game close if that is the case.  Of course, it is too early to make that determination but for now Liberty gives up quite a few points, Oregon has a solid rush defense and this game could get ugly if Nix does play.

Both teams ran the ball a lot and while Michigan defense was strong in every aspect Alabama has absolutely exceeded expectations but I see Michigan winning. Should be a close, low scoring game.

No. 2 Washington vs. No. 3 Texas

Caesars Superdome - New Orleans, Louisiana

Washington keeps on surprising and will face a Texas team that blew out Oklahoma State. Both teams are explosive offensively and Texas is vulnerable in the secondary and Washington will keep this close and never be out of it.
